Greenhouses add a whole new dimension to gardening. They allow you to grow plants that wouldn't fare well in your climate normally. They help you extend the growing season for fruits and vegetables. Having a greenhouse makes it easier to propagate plants from cuttings and seeds so you can expand your collection of your favorite garden flowers. And a greenhouse will allow you to extend the space of your house becoming an outdoor room where you can relax and work on your gardening hobby year round.

You can spend a lot of money on an impressive greenhouse structure, build a simple greenhouse inexpensively or create something anywhere in between. Here are some suggestions to help you build a greenhouse of your own.

First decide on a site where a green house will look good and be practical in the garden. Choose a location with as much sun as possible. Then measure out how much space you can comfortably allot to building your greenhouse. You can build a temporary structure that will be quick and easy, though it may not handle extreme weather well or last very long. If you are not sure if you really want to spend the money on a proper greenhouse, this might be a wise way to experiment first. Or you can plan on constructing an impressive structure that can actually become the focal point of your garden. Of course, there are many designs that are in between these extremes. What is important is that you design your greenhouse into your landscape so it blends with the whole area and that you build a greenhouse that will suit both your needs and your budget. Also be aware that in many areas you will need to have your construction permitted and inspected if it is a permanent feature built into your landscape.

You can order kits, build one from scratch or have yours built for you. Your decision here will be based on how much money you want to spend, how much time you have and how good your are in building and construction.

If you would like instructions on a really simple way to build a cheap greenhouse, check out the Las Pilitas website. This will give you clear, well illustrated step by step instructions on how to build a plastic greenhouse using PVC pipe.

There are greenhouse kits for sale that are a little more solid and structured. These can range from build-it-yourself kits to more elaborate constructions that are best handled by a professional builder. Greenhouses can be framed in wood, metal or PVC and covered with glass, plastic or a number of special materials developed for maximum light and insulation. They also come in a variety of sizes and even different shapes.

For people with good construction skills, there are plans available on the internet – many for free – that you can follow to build your own greenhouse. Or if you are good at designing, you can plan and build your own from scratch. Below you can find some good sites to find more information if you are thinking of building a greenhouse.
