Three Essential Piece of Equipment for the Carp Angler - A Bivvy, A Carp Reel, A Carp Rod and A Bite Alarm
Carp fishing is a very specialised type of fishing and as such requires specialist types of equipment and tackle. For most carp anglers they take their fishing very seriously and will spend many weeks a year sat at the waters edge waiting for that one special fish to pick up their bait and give them the fight of their lives. There are four pieces of fishing equipment that no carp angler would or should be without:
A Fishing Bivvy
As I mentioned above, the carp angler spends weeks fishing every year. Carp fishing is as much about camping as it is fishing and so the angler needs to protect themselves adequately from any inclement weather that they may experience. Therefore most carp anglers will own a fishing bivvy. In most cases a bivvy really is nothing more than a two man tent that has been adapted to fishing. It will have a large open door and will more than likely be olive drab or camouflage in colour. Most of the time - unlike tents - they are bought as just a single skin shelter which is made from a single breathable membrane similar to GoreTex. As an aftermarket 'add-on' you can usually buy a wrap that you can add over the top of it, to give some extra warmth in the winter.
A Carp Reel
Carp reels – sometimes called bait runners – are key to hooking and landing these large powerful fish. The lightweight second clutch allows the fish to do its initial powerful run without breaking your line, or worse still dragging your tackle in to the lake. Deep spools allow carp reels to take vast quantities of heavy breaking strain fishing line that will accommodate even the most distant of casts and powerful fish.
A Carp Rod
A carp rod will usually have at least a 1.75lb test curve – to the layman - this is the weight it takes to bend the rod 90 degrees on its self. This is much stiffer than a general fishing rod and it needs to be – carp are much stronger fish than your average freshwater quarry. The carp rod has to be able to control these larger fish and also be able to cast out heavy fishing weights long distances.
A Bite Alarm
A bite alarm is a critical piece of carp fishing equipment as you will invariable need to sleep at some point. The alarm will alert you to any bites or nibbles, it means that you don't have to have your full attention on your rods all of the time and this will make your fishing trip far more enjoyable.
These are just four of the pieces of fishing equipment used by carp anglers, there are of course many more but these are the critical ones.
