If you love custard desserts, and want to make something quick then try these three easy and fast recipes. I use Birds Custard Powder. I find it mixes the best without any lumps, and I need something that works quickly. You can usually find it in the baking section of your local grocery store.

1. Custard Chocolate Surprise

I came up with this idea when the kids were younger, but everyone loves it so much, I still make it!

What you will need:

Good quality plain milk chocolate bar. You can experiment with different ones, but I find a good milk chocolate of your choice works well. I personally use Cadbury plain milk chocolate, in the larger bars.

Custard powder, sugar (it asks for 3 tablespoons to make the custard)

Method: This serves 4. Take your chocolate bar and break it into bite sized pieces, evenly amongst 4 dessert bowls.

Make the custard as per directions on the container. Then as soon as it has boiled and thickened, remove from the heat and pour evenly over the 4 bowls of chocolate pieces right away while hot.


Then leave to sit on the counter and cool slightly, while you eat your dinner. This is best made just as you are about to serve dinner. After dinner, serve your custard chocolate surprise. It looks like a simple yellow custard dish, but tastes divine! The chocolate will have melted from the custard, but as the custard cools, it turns into a melt in your mouth dessert. Yummy and quick.

2. Strawberries and Chocolate Custard

What you will need:

Washed and cut strawberries in individual dessert bowls

Custard powder, sugar (it asks for 3 tablespoons to make the custard)


1 tablespoon cocoa powder (unsweetened) since you already add sugar while making the custard, there is no need to add any more.


Cook the custard following the container directions, but add the cocoa powder when you add the sugar. Constantly stir the custard, until it comes to a boil and thickens.

Pour this over your strawberries, and leave to sit until you finish dinner. This tastes great, like a smooth chocolate cream.. Really good. Adds a bit of fun to your strawberries!

3. Custard Trifle

What you will need:

Large glass bowl

one package of orange flavored Jell-O powder

one small tin of mandarin oranges

batch of custard made up

whipping cream, either whip yourself, or purchase can of whipping cream.

chocolate sprinkles or shaved chocolate for garnish.


Make your Jell-O according to package directions, and then add the drained can of mandarin oranges. Put in your glass bowl.

Let this sit in the fridge until set.

Make your custard according to container directions, and then let it cool.

Spread over the Jell-O evenly.

Cover and put back in the fridge.

Make up your whipping cream (I use those small cartons of whipping cream and whip it myself, but whatever your choice will work too!)

Spread the whipping cream on top of the custard, and then add chocolate garnishes.

Kids love this trifle. The traditional trifle would have sherry soaked pound cake in the Jell-O, and coming from a British background, this was always on the table for dessert. But my grandmother used to make this special one for the kids. This one that was made for the kids, is the one we use all the time now.

I was never a big fan of the texture of the cake in the Jell-O. In the above recipe, I use mandarin oranges in the Jell-O, but you can change this up to any kind of flavor. Such as pineapple chunks in lemon Jell-O, or strawberries in the red Jell-O, or no fruit at all, just plain Jell-O.

Custard makes a great dessert. It is easy to make. When you decide to make it, don't leave it on the stove. You pretty well have to stand there and stir it, as it sticks to the bottom of the pot quite easily, and nothing tastes worse than burnt milk and custard!

Another simple recipe, if you are short on time, is a simple custard pie.

What you will need:

A baked pie shell, can be pastry or graham crumb, your choice.

A batch of custard (there is a note on the container for runnier or thicker custard, when using it in a pie, make the thicker batch of custard)

You can add chocolate pieces, or chocolate chips on the bottom of the pie for that added flavor for chocolate addicts! or just plain.


Pour your custard into the baked pie shell, and then let it cool. Serve this pie cold.

Add whip cream to the top and some decorations, and you have made a simple dessert that does not look simple.

Adding the chocolate layer is a great added surprise!

You can vary it a little, by using chocolate milk instead of regular milk. That makes for a real creamy topping for any dessert

But so far, in my family of grown children, the first recipe, chocolate custard surprise, is still a hit, and has been for years. At Christmas I made this dessert and instead of broken pieces of chocolate, I put in one lindt chocolate ball. That was a real treat to dig into.

Desserts don't have to be complicated. To tell you the truth, if I have to start hauling out recipe books and need loads of ingredients that I don't normally keep in my cabinets, it is not going to happen! You want simple, easy and tasty. You can make your own custard from scratch with eggs and milk and lots of time. But my grandma, and my mom both used this Birds custard powder, and even though I went through a stage of making everything from scratch, I could not get that same flavor as you get from this product.

So, give it a try. As long as you have milk, then you have dessert. You can even cook this with soy milk. I have done that and it tastes great. So, next time you are asked to make dessert, let everyone else bring the squares and the big ingredient cookies, and you can bring that custard trifle. It looks great in a glass bowl with all the layers, and it did not take you all day to make!

As soon as everyone sees that pretty bowl of layers, they will want to dig into your dessert!
