Fire has been one of the most fascinating bits of nature since people first layed eyes on it. It's beauty, warmth, and utility has made it one of the most common sights in the home and garden today. From fireplaces and wood stoves, to elaborit fire features in outdoor gardens, fire continues to be one of the best indoor and outdoor decorations around! However fire can be extremely dangerous if not treated with respect.

What are Decorative Fire Features?

The term fire feature merely describes any bit of decoration that employs the use of a flame. This could describe a wide variety of decorations however. Some examples of fire features are outdoor tiki torches, fire pans, wood stoves, and fire places. Even with just these four examples, there are tons of decorations to choose from, and knowing which one best fits your existing decor is critical to a beautiful home or garden.

Tiki Torches: These fire features are composed of a large metal or bamboo rod with a torch at the top. The rod is placed securely into the ground, and then the top is lit. Tiki torches come in gas and various oil burning varieties, some even acting as insect repellents! Often many lit tiki torches are used to impart a tropical feel to the garden or outdoor area.

Fire Places: Many would call this the quintessential fire decoration. the fireplace has been used for centuries for entertainment, comfort, and even cooking. Fireplaces are usually composed of a central fire pit on ground level, with a chimney that takes the smoke up and out of the home. Outdoor fireplaces are also quickly becoming very popular among many home designers. There are also many specialty fireplace tools available, some even being decorations themselves!

Fire Pans: These devices are merely large metal pans used to hold a fire. Often fire pans are held atop a pedestal of some type and used as a decoration much like the tiki torch. They are also used for "campfire" style cooking in many urban areas.

Wood Stoves: Wood stoves are kind of like fireplaces, but with a couple key differences. Wood stoves consist of mainly a large metal box with a chimney leading from the top. The fire is lit inside the box, resulting in the wood stove radiating large amounts of heat. Many people use their wood stove for cooking, as the surface can easily become hot enough for this application. As far as decor is concerned, many wood stoves feature open faces, much like the fireplace.
