Tips For A Great Trip To Teotihuacan Mexico

By Edited Oct 6, 2016 0 0

Teotihuacan is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the New World and one look at it will tell you why. This is an impressive site which everyone in the area and those that love ancient cultures simply must visit. Unfortunately it can be easy to not be well prepared for such a trip because just looking at the pictures online can be a bit deceiving. Here are some tips that will make your trip a lot easier.

Stay In Mexico City

The truth is that when you see such a massive archaeological site it can be tempting to stay close to it. While there are good lodging options in the area, it is highly recommended that you choose Mexico City as your base. The city will have a lot more to offer and getting to the ruins is very easy and affordable. You would have to go to the Terminal Central del Norte which is located on the Metro’s yellow line. If you walk all the way to the left once you come in you will be able to see the booth that sells the tickets to Teotihuacan. The price is less than five dollars per person and the trip takes close to an hour.

Don’t Drive There

While the traffic on the way to Teotihuacan is not nearly as bad as it is in Mexico City, you should still avoid driving. The reason is that there are three parking lots in the complex and to see the entire thing that would mean going from one end of the complex to the next and then back. That can take the entire day and leave you drained of energy unless you are in top shape. The buses that take you to Teotihuacan leave you in one end and pick you up close to the main pyramids, making your visit a lot easier.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Teotihuacan is a very impressive and large site so you will need to wear very comfortable shoes. Even if you do not like to wear athletic shoes you should make an exception because it can take a few hours to visit the entire site. Also keep in mind that the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon can be climbed and though they do not look as massive in pictures, they are. The bus to Teotihuacan leaves you on one end and the pyramids are on the other so the walking is not a choice if you want to see the best that Teotihuacan has to offer.

Stay Hydrated

Since you are getting ready for a very long walk in which you will be climbing up and down stairs, it is wise to bring some water with you. There are a few vending machines by the main entrance, but they only sell small bottles which will not be enough. Bring a back pack with you and include at least a 1lt. bottle for your trip. Security will check the backpack, but will allow you to bring the water in with you. The day time in Teotihuacan can get really hot so water is a must.

Prepare Yourself Mentally For The Heights

As mentioned earlier it is possible to climb the Pyramid of the Sun as well as the Pyramid of the Moon and you should do so. The views that you get from the top of each pyramid is breath taking. There is however one very large problem for those that are not comfortable with heights and that is that the way down can be a bit challenging. The way up can be tiring, but the way down is downright scary. Prepare yourself and if necessary lean on the steps on the way down. You will not be the only one doing it and it will make the way down a lot easier.
