Tips On Finding Motorbike Insurance
Motorbikes can be fun to have and ride, but finding motorbike insurance may not be all that exhilarating. Here are a few tips that might help you when searching for motorbike insurance.
Always start with the insurance company where you or your parents have their auto insurance. Most companies will write a motorbike insurance policy if they have the auto insurance also. However, you also need to be aware that there are some companies, such as those known as standard insurance companies, which will not write insurance for any type of "crotch rocket" or high performance motorbike. Another method of getting inexpensive car insurance is by group together multiple drivers and/or vehicles. This includes both cars and motorbikes. If you are getting either car insurance for new drivers or motorcycle insurance be prepared to pay through the roof for your coverage.
If you do have one of the motorbikes known as a crotch rocket or high performance, be prepared to pay a pretty good price for the insurance. If you do not have car insurance somewhere you will more than likely have to contact a sub standard insurance company or an independent agent that writes insurance through several different companies.
The majority of insurance companies will require that you have had a motorbike safety course before they will write insurance for you. Again this is specifically required on high performance motorbikes.
Another thing to be aware of is the fact the almost all insurance companies will not write medical payments on a motorbike. If you happen to get hurt in a motorbike accident, you will have to have either health insurance or pay for any medical or hospital bills out of pocket. This also goes for any passengers who may be riding the bike with you as well as anyone you let drive the motorbike.
Also, just like automobiles, insurance companies will usually not write full coverage on motorbikes over a certain age unless they see the bike and get special permission from their underwriters. Some companies will write insurance for an antique motorbike if it has antique tags and registered as an antique.
In some states it is not mandatory to wear helmets when riding a motorbike. However, you always need to make sure you ask the insurance company what their policy on helmet wearing is. Some insurance companies will not give any kind of payout if you have an accident and are not wearing a helmet. The same thing applies to passengers on the bike or anyone else who may be driving the bike.
Thus, motorbikes may be fun to ride but finding motorbike insurance may be very time consuming and nerve wracking since a lot of companies do not like to write motorbike insurance anymore.
