Step 2: Next, you have to be knowledgeable on the game and know the ins and outs of your position. In addition to this you should know everyone else's responsibility on the field. In addition to this, study the history of the game and learn of the great players who have come before you. This will give you an edge over your opponents.

Step 3: Study film of your opponents on a constant basis. This is especially important during the season. You have to put in film session time on your own even when your coaches are not there. This will help you learn your opponents strengths and weaknesses. It is important in helping you become a better football player.

Step 4: Try to practice football drills specific to your position on a daily basis. For example, if you are a wide receiver, then work on catching the football everyday. If you are a linebacker then work on shedding blocks and tackling the ball carrier on a daily basis. These drills will help you dominate at your position.

Step 5: Stay in the weight room constantly. If you can, try to never take breaks off. The only way to be a great player is to train year round. There is no off season in the game of football. This is gold. So many people don't realize what it takes to succeed at football. Then again, most people have no clue what the average athlete does day in and day out (other than the games they watch).

If all the arm-chair quarterbacks out there had to go through what collegiate football players go through every day... I'd be willing to bet that 95 percent would quit before the first day was over. 4% would quit once the first day was done, and 1% would stick around for another day or two just out of spite... but they wouldn't last long.
