I am noticing that many overweight people, even those who are morbidly obese, often have no idea how they got there. They have made it to this point in life where they know they're unhappy with how they look and feel, but don't understand why. In Canada and the USA, we have access to the best of the best in terms of fresh, locally grown produce, whole grain foods and options for every type of diet. Yet people are still tipping the scales at 300+ pounds. How is this possible? There are dozens of options out there to help you lose weight, but first it's important to understand how you got where you are now. Maybe hearing it from a weight loss success story like me will help motivate you.

Here are the top two reasons behind the obesity epidemic in America.

1. Lack of education

Despite our modern education system and access to smart phones, computers and any 
information we really should ever need, many of us still don't understand nutrition. Our education system is great at teaching kids many things, but has some major failures. Financial education and nutritional education are two good examples. Kids simply aren't learning how to eat at school, and if they have two obese parents at home grooming their eating habits, they don't stand a chance.

2. Abundance of crap food

Everywhere you go there signage promoting a great deal on something that is terrible for you. From fast food to the chips, soda and chocolate that are heavily promoted in grocery stores, the system keeps you fat. You do need to eat to lose weight, but it doesn't mean that you're restricted to veggies forever. You need to broaden your horizons and realize that there are tons of healthy options out there that don't require you to eat nothing but salad.

If you follow these basic guidelines you can start reaching your weight loss goals today.  There's no shortage of programs or systems to help you lose weight but you need to understand the fundamentals of why your body has gained the weight in the first place. I have a friend who is well over 300 pounds and doesn't feel that he needs to give up drinking soda to achieve his weight loss goals. He doesn't understand the nutritional value of what he's putting into his body. Few foods on earth are worse for you than soda, and he drinks it everyday.

You probably don't know what is keeping you fat. You may have a vague idea like maybe you're fat because you don't exercise enough, but you can exercise until you're blue in the face and if you're consuming 5000 calories of zero nutritional value in a day, you won't get anywhere.

Here are some simple steps to follow that will help you lose weight starting today.

1. Keep a food journal

Record everything you eat. Don't miss one thing. Do this for a week or two and take the journal to a nutritionist. This will have a small cost but the first step is to learn what you're doing wrong and start learning how to eat to lose weight. You can't start eating to lose weight until you know what's keeping you fat. I would recommend that you keep your typical diet while you're doing your food journal. The nutritionist will need to know your regular habits and trying to fool them will only hold you back.

2. Find a physical activity that you enjoy doing

Want to know why the gym is packed in January and empty in March? People set goals to go and beat themselves up at the gym but that's not the type of activity that most people thrive on. Think of physical activities that you really enjoy. It may be simply walking your dog  or playing frisbee but you need to capitalize on things that you enjoy doing or you won't stick to it. Find some friends who like the same things and start a club. Meet several times per week and walk your dogs or go for a hike. Whatever it is that you enjoy doing physically, you need to focus on those things and you will be building a foundation for long-term success with your weight loss goals.

3. Accountability

Accountability is one of the strongest ways that we can avoid bad habits. You need people to be accountable to. You won't succeed and build your own weight loss success story on your own, you will need help from people that you trust. Not just one person, find several and tell them what you're up to. Write out your promises to yourself and the things that you're staying away from. Tell them to hold you accountable by any means necessary. You need somebody helping you grocery shop, and checking your fridge to make sure you're not sneaking things. Have them phone you during the day and ask how you're doing with food today. You need a support network of people who care about you to get to the finish line.

Weight loss is simple, it's our personal knowledge and attitude that needs to change.


Always remember that there are tons of healthy foods out there and programs to help you lose weight. You don't have to eat like a rabbit. There are lots of healthy snack options that you will grow to love more than a chocolate bar in time. Push through, and when you start to see the results you will have even more motivation to keep going!

That is a crazy picture. I believe in the "Abundance of Crapfood" and lack of information on making and eating healthy food. I know that sometimes it is just easier to grab fastfood then to go home and fix a whole meal. Of coarse, that is the trap. Great article and I like the journal idea.
