However, constantly exposing your locks to excessive heat, such as blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons can cause a great deal of damage that impedes growth. Try to limit the exposure to heat, always use heated styling tools on the lowest setting and be sure to use a heat protector. It seems that if you want hair to lengthen at a faster rate, it would be counterproductive to regularly cut off bits of it. The fact of the matter, however, is that regular trims will make your locks healthier and that is what allows them to grow faster. This is actually one of the easiest ways to prevent split ends and other types of breakage that could cause you to cut inches off your locks. Ideally, you should get a trim about every six weeks; just be sure to tell the stylist to cut the smallest amount and that you want the hair to lengthen.

Pay Attention To Your Protein Intake

If you are serious about making your hair grow more quickly, then you need to take care with what you eat. A balanced diet will not only improve your overall health, but that of your hair as well. Try to eat as many fruits, vegetables, fish and meat as possible. Protein is especially important as it is what makes up your hair. Therefore if you lack protein in your diet, your hair growth will stunt. If you opt for proteins like lean meats (turkey and chicken), nuts, beans, soy products, eggs and fish you will not only increase the protein available, but also help promote production of keratin which makes up hair.

Pay Attention To Fats

When talking about foods to help hair growth you should not ignore fats. Eating small quantities of certain fats can help your body process vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K, all of which help healthy hair production. When picking the fats, however, it is important to stick to good ones such as omega-3 fatty acids and avoid bad ones such as hydrogenated fats, trans fatty acids and saturated fats.

You also want to pay attention to your intake of certain nutrients that will help your hair grow faster. Iron, for example, helps your body deliver oxygen to the cells within it including the ones in your hair follicles. If you don’t want to take iron supplements, try increasing your intake by consuming more lean meat, beans, soy products or lentils. Zinc is also important to hair production as it helps repair tissues which in turn will make sure your hair receives the right amount of oil. To increase your zinc consumption opt for foods like oysters, toasted wheat germ, low-fat roast beef, roasted squash and pumpkin seeds, cocoa powder and dark chocolate. You also want to make sure you are consuming enough vitamin C as your body uses this vitamin to make collagen (which is essential for hair growth) and to break down iron. For this nutrient opt for foods such as citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, cantaloupe and spinach.

Look At Your Medications

If you are on medications, it is possible that one or more has the side effect of slowing down hair production. Some of the most common ones that can cause hair loss include:

  • Thyroid medications
  • Epilepsy drugs
  • Weight-loss drugs
  • Steroids
  • Mood stabilizers
  • Hormone replacements
  • Immune system suppressants
  • Drugs to lower cholesterol
  • High blood pressure medicines

The idea that brushing your hair at least a hundred times will make it healthier is a myth as it can actually cause more breakage. This will encourage the blood flow to your scalp and hair follicles and in turn increase production.

Avoid Stress

It may seem odd that stress can influence hair production but it can actually make a big difference. Although it won’t lead to baldness, it can temporarily stop your body’s production of hair. Try to relax and manage your daily life stresses. Physical stresses such as severe injuries or surgeries may also slow down the growth of your locks so if you experience these, don’t have unrealistic expectations of hair growth until your body heals completely.
