Tip 1: Market the garage sale early

One of the most important thing you can do is to make sure people know that you garage sale is on. This means placing classified ads in your local newspapers early and any community internet sites. Place notices up on any noticeboards at work or your children's school.

Tip 2: Have your neighbours hold garage sales too

If you can get your whole street or a number of houses in the street to hold a garage sale then everyone will benefit. More people are likely to show up to the garage sales and therefore sell more items. You can turn it into a festival atmosphere with sausages sizzles and entertainment for the kids.

Tip 3: Get the whole family involved

You can give a box to your children and have them place items inside that they would like to sell at the garage sale. It could be anything: cheap picture frames, toys, clothes, bedding or even musical items like used drum sets or old guitars.

Tip 4: Put up posters

Have your children places up posters and signs pointing people to your garage sale in the surrounding streets. This will allow people looking for your sale to find it easily and anyone else that may come across the sign.

Tip 5: Set a start and finish time

Be very clear in all your advertisements about when the sale will start and finish. Otherwise, you will have people showing up at 5 am or just as you are packing all your leftovers away.

Tip 6: Get Your Friends to Participate

Ask your friends to provide a box of old things. This will ensure that you have plenty of stuff to sell and you could ask your friends for commission on anything that you sell. Your friends will be able to sell some of their old stuff with hardly any effort.

Tip 7: Clean everything

There is nothing worse than going to a garage sale and finding something that you want, only to see that it hasn't been cleaned in years. If you want to get top dollar for you items then it is important that you clean, polish and launder them before they go on sale.
