In some design styles such as shabby chic, country, or French country it's totally acceptable to mix and match fabrics as long as they are in the same color palette. This may mean that you could have a checked piece, floral chair, and striped couch. You can mix and match pieces that work for your family and your aesthetic at the same time.

Work with what you already have in the room. You may have to rob some of the other rooms in your home to get a totally new look without spending any money.
