Tips for Increasing your Bench Press

By | Mar 19, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 1

Getting stronger in the bench press is getting a stronger upper body in general. The bench press has long been known for its raw display of physical strength. Improving your bench is a sure way to know that you are getting stronger. It's important to not just focus on one exercise, keep your fitness routine well diversified to achieve a balanced body. This article is going to try to cover some of the basics for maximizing your bench press numbers.

Form

One of the best ways to add weight to any technical lift is to practice the form. Try to video tape yourself lifting and compare it to videos online. It is very hard to see what you are doing while you are lifting. It also helps to have a partner to workout with that can point out form errors and provide a spot for you. I like to do a few warm up sets with just the bar to really concentrate on the form.

Utilize Warm up Sets

Practicing your form with warm up sets is not only a good way to practice form but also to prepare the muscle for the load to come. I like to work my way up from any empty bar to the target weight that I am trying to get for the day. This you know the feeling of the heavy weight when you go to lift your heaviest sets, instead of jumping right into them.

Progressive Overload

Linear progression is a method for increase the amount of weight you lift on your routine. Every time perform the lift, you are trying to do more weight than last time. If your diet and rest are in check, you should be able to add around 5lbs to each of your lifts every time you go to the gym. This not only provides great motivation, but also gets you much stronger. Make sure to get on a proven well rounded workout routine.
