Tips for Selecting a Good Domain Name

By | Oct 26, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The real estate of the Internet are domain names. The success of your website is similar in comparison to the success of a business outside of the Internet. Location is a key factor in determining the revenues for businesses outside of the Internet and the same philosophy goes for websites on the Internet.

1. Short and Sweet

An effective domain name is specific and to the point. It is no surprise that short domain names are quickly vanishing. This same pattern is also decreasing the choices for 4 or 5 word domain names as well.

Although there is no specific number to aim for, it is better to have a shorter domain name. The best way to implement this is by using below 10 characters, and never go passed 20.

2. They are easily memorized

A lot of people do not use their bookmark feature on their computer when they come across a website that is of interest to them. If you fail to provide a domain name that is memorable, it is more then likely that these people will not remember the name of your website and you will lose these visitors in the process.

3. The name is easy to spell

If someone spells your domain name wrong they will end up on somewhere else and you will lose a potential visitor. Do not use uncommon words, not everyone is a spelling pro and avoid using a strange combination of letters or words.

4. They use .com as an extension

Certain organizations might give preference to a .org domain, while others target a certain geographical location might register a local domain (that incorporates .it, .co, .uk and so on). Aside from these instances, a .com domain name is the most beneficial way to go because many people are familiar with this extension.

People who navigate websites by the use of search engines most likely pay close attention to the name of the website and not the URL. If they decide they want to visit your site again it is more common that they will type in the name followed by the .com extension.

5. They are detailed

A lot of visitors will be directed to your website through various search engines and by way of direct links found on other websites. It is more likely that they will visit your site if the domain name is appealing to them.

By having a descriptive domain name, this enables viewers to see what your site is about prior to going to it.
Also if keywords are implemented into the domain name this will also help with your search engine rankings.

6. Be brandable

A domain name that is brandable, is easily pronounced, may include visually pleasing effects or a good combination of letters. A brandable domain helps the visitors associate your website and it's content.

7. They do not include hyphens or numbers

These type of domain names are a lot cheaper then other domain names without these characters because it is uncommon for a person to search for a website using these characters.

In closing

Do not lose hope if your domain name doesn't have these particular characteristics; or if you are unable to find one that does. These are just some of the techniques you can use when deciding on an effective domain name for your website.
