The Mercedes Benz has been a popular vehicle for many years since this brand of car first came out in 1926. Mercedes has its headquarters in Germany and can trace its history back even further to the 1901 Mercedes of Daimler and Karl Benz’s Benz Patent Motorwagen in 1886, which is one of the very first cars.
Since that timeframe, there have been several beloved Mercedes cars and the following are the top ten of all time:
1937 -- 540 K Special
One of the most powerful cars of the 1930s was the Mercedes 540 K special. It had a 180 horse power engine and set the mark for future cars to follow in the first part of the 20th century. Then, most cars couldn’t break 100 mph, so it was considered to be a special car indeed. It has a very large engine, so was very loud and was said to be hard to steer. It also didn’t take curves well, but was great for long stretches of straight highway.
If you can find one today, it can go for millions of dollars to the right buyer!
1954 -- 300 SL Gullwing
The Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing was THE car to help make the Mercedes brand stand out with the general public in the United States. Before it came out, not many Americans desired to own a Mercedes. However, the Gullwing oozed luxury and was a sports car that was made for the rich, as only 1,400 were ever made. It was the first car to have fuel injection in its combustion chamber and was rated at the number five sports car of all time!
1955 -- 300 SLR Racer
Another of the great 1950s Mercedes cars was the 300 SLR Racer. It was somewhat based on the Gullwing car, but had an all aluminum frame, so weighed less. It had air brakes, which was new for a race car like it was. It is famous for being the car that Stirling Moss drove and won with in 1955 in a race called the Mille Miglia.
1963 -- 600 Pullman
Created in 1963, this Pullman Mercedes was quite popular with stars like Hugh Hefner, John Lennon, Coco Chanel, Elizabeth Taylor and Aristotle Onassis. It was even owned by a few Catholic Popes.
Only 3,000 of these great cars were made and it is considered to be a luxury sedan. It has a moon roof; doors and windows that were hydraulically powered, which was amazing clear back in 1963. Plus, it is said to have a horn that is the loudest that was ever put onto a vehicle at that time. It is still considered to be one of the great Mercedes icons and is a predecessor to today’s Mercedes Maybach sedan.
1970 -- C111
This Mercedes C111 series was actually an experimental version of Mercedes that they used to test the technologies of the company cars. They tested things like diesel engines, air conditioning and other luxuries not common in the 1970s, and other innovative ideas. It was all fiberglass in its body and it set several speed records of the times, one of which was 250.98 mph! It also had a 500 horse power rated engine that made it very powerful.
1979 -- Gelandewagen (G-Class)
Originally appearing in 1979, this is one of the top Mercedes vehicles. Affectionately called the G-Wagon, this vehicle was made for the usage of the German army. It was meant to be a lighter weight combat vehicle. It has a box like body and is used in off roading activities. Today, this G-wagon style is still a favorite and can run an owner more than $100,000 to buy it. It is considered to be one of the priciest SUVs available.
1983 -- 190E Cosworth
This Mercedes came out in 1983 and was made to compete in rallies off road. It is known for setting three world speed records and was one of the first AMG sedan style of cars.
2004 -- CLS
Made starting in 2004, the Mercedes CLS was designed as an innovative concept car with a sloped top similar to a coupe, but sporting four doors like a sedan. The back seat is very small, and only two can fit into it and into the front, so four in total can go for a ride.
Its design is said to me part of what set the tone for other cars such as the Porsche, Aston Marin and even the Maserati. It is a sports car feel in a sedan body and at the time, that had not been attempted.
2010 -- E63 AMG
This is another Mercedes sedan type of car. It comes with 20 inch wheel rims, a flared shape of body, and a distinctive and recognizable motor sound when it starts up. It has a 6.2 liter engine with 517 horse power and can go from zero mph to 60mph in four seconds flat! It also has four settings on the transmission. It is very sought after still yet today!
2011 -- SLS AMG
In 2011 the SLS AMG Mercedes Gullwing came out with its all aluminum frame. It was created and designed by AMG in Mercedes very own high performance unit. It has a 6.2 liter V8 engine and gives out a total of 575 horse power, with a seven speed transmission with a dual clutch and is semi-automatic.
It is not the same as the original Gullwing vehicle that came out in the 1950s, but it does have similar doors in tribute to that car. Those doors can even be blown off the frame if need be during a roll over crash.
All in all, these are some of the most beloved of all the top Mercedes cars of all time and this brand of car continues to be very sought after and a car considered the car of races and of the rich and famous people of the world.
