Top 10 Movies Based on Sportsmen

There are so many movies has been made on sports and sportsmen. So, it is natural that everyone has his own favorite lists. Internet is full of such lists but one’s favorite list is always unique. So, this is my favorite list of movies based on sportsmen.

Sportsmen have always been an inspiration for sports lovers. Their life is a powerful example for future sports persons. It is not always possible for common people to get a book or other information due to so many reasons. In this place, movies become a great help to know about our own favorite sports personalities.

My favorite lists of top 10 movies based on sportsmen are given below. Counting starts with the last and from earlier years.

10. Pride of the Yankees                                              

The movie Pride of the Yankees is one of the favorite movies of all time. It was released in the year of 1942. Gary Cooper, again one of the best, performed the lead role in this film. He played the role of real life baseball player legend Lou Gehrig. This movie was based on the life of Lou Gehrig. Pride of the Yankees was directed by Sam Wood and other actors and actresses are Walter Brennan and Teresa Wright. The film was nominated for 11 Oscars Awards and also won the Best Editor award for this film.

9. Somebody Up There Likes Me
Somebody Up There Likes Me had been released in 1956. The film was based on middleweight boxer Rocky Graziano. The movie was directed by Robert Wise. The lead role of boxer legend Rocky Graziano had been performed by actor Paul Newman. He was also supported on the screen by Pier Angeli and Everett Sloane. The film Somebody Up There Likes Me had also won two Oscars Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. This movie is one of the greatest movies ever.

8. Chariots of Fire
The movie Chariots of Fire was based on two athletes, Harold Abrahams performed by Ben Cross and Eric Liddell performed by Ian Charleson of the 1924 Olympics in Paris. The movie was released in 1981. The main characters were played by Ben Cross, Ian Charleson, Alice Krige and Nigel Havers. It was directed by Hugh Hudson. The film was nominated for 7 Oscars Award out of which has won 4 Oscars for Best Picture, Best Writing, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score.

7. Searching for Bobby Fischer  

In this movie Searching for Bobby Fischer released in 1993. This film was based on the life of Joshua Waitzkin, a prodigious chess player. The lead character of Joshua Waitzkin was performed by Max Pomeranc.  Along with Max Pomeranc, Sir Ben Kingsley was also acted in this movie. Others stars were Joe Mantegna and Joan Allen. The film was directed by Steven Zaillian. Searching for Bobby Fischer was released as Innocent Moves in UK.

6. Rudy

The movie Rudy has been one of the most watched films ever. Rudy was based on the life of football player Daniel Ruettiger. The character of Daniel Ruettiger was played by actor Sean Astin along with Jon Favreau and Ned Beatty. The film was released in 1993. David Anspaugh was the director of this movie.

5. Ali
Actor Will Smith is one my all time favorite. In this movie, Ali, actor Will Smith had done a tremendous job. The film was based on legendary heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali. Will Smith exactly match the role of Ali. The movie was released in 2001. Ali, the film, had been directed by Michael Mann. The film was captured just a portion of the life of Muhammad Ali. The other casts are Jamie Foxx, Ron Silver and Jon Voight. Will Smith was also nominated for Oscars Award, but he missed it.

4. Radio
Radio was released in 2003 and had been directed by Mike Tollin. This movie was based on the life of football coach Harold Jones. The film Radio had the star named Ed Harris in the lead role of coach Harold Jones and other stars were Cuba Gooding, Jr. who was performing the title role of radio, along with Debra Winger, S. Epatha Merkerson and Alfre Woodard. The film was not liked by all, but as always Ed Harris is exceptional, so I liked this film.

3. Cinderella Man
Cinderella Man, one of my favorite movies, was released in 2005. In this film Russell Crowe has been performing the lead role. The film was based on the life of James J. Braddock, a boxing heavyweight champion performed by Crowe. The director of this film was Ron Howard. The other casts were Renee Zellweger and Paul Giamatti. The film, Cinderella Man, was also nominated for Oscars Award, but unfortunately hadn’t won one.

2. The Rocket    

The Rocket movie was released in 2005. The film was based on legendary ice hockey player Maurice Richard. The movie was directed by Charles Biname. Maurice Richard has been played by Roy Dupuis along with Julie LeBreton and Stephen McHattie. The film had won so many awards across the globe.

1. The Express  

The Express movie was based on the life of an African-American football player, named Ernie Davis, who won the Heisman Trophy. It has been released in 2008. The film was directed by Gary Fleder. The movie is also known as The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. In the reel, Ernie Davis was played by actor Rob Brown along with other veteran co-stars Charles S. Dutton and Dennis Quaid.

In conclusion, I can only say that above mentioned movies are randomly selected amongst the big list of movies of my favorite. There are lots of other films in this category I can name, but this list is close to my heart. I have intentionally skipped myself from revealing the film’s story to avoid the charm being spoiled.
