Top 10 millionaires who give money to the poor

While there are many millionaires who are known for their wealth and glamorous lifestyles, it is refreshing to know that quite a few of them are giving back to society by donating a part of their money to the poor or by setting up charities that give money to wealthy people. There are many millionaires giving away money to help those less fortunate than themselves. While making a list of the top 10 millionaires who give money to the poor is a somewhat subjective endeavor, it is worth listing some of the most prominent philanthropists who have dedicated themselves to helping the needy by setting aside some of their money for poor people. Here are some of the millionaires who give away money to help the poor:

1) Oprah Winfrey

Oprah does not need an introduction to most of us. She has gained fame as a TV superstar, but is also widely recognized and respected for her efforts in helping the needy. Oprah’s Angel Network provided help to needy people by through educational scholarships, youth centers and shelters for women.

2) George Soros
Soros made his fortune as a financier. He has set up foundations that foster socially progressive causes such as the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance and freedom of the press. George Soros is another millionaire who gives money to the poor. One way George Soros helped the needy was by giving university scholarships to black students in South Africa during the time of apartheid.

3) Ted Turner
Media mogul Ted Turner founded CNN and is also a real estate mogul and restaurant owner. But he is also well known for his several charities, such as the Turner Foundation, that give grants to help the needy. 

4) Bill Gates and Melinda Gates
Bill Gates needs no introduction as one of the founders of Microsoft and perhaps the world’s richest man. But Bill and his wife, Melinda Gates, are also well known as the founder of the world’s largest private foundation. The Bill and Melina Gates Foundation is one of the largest charities that give money to the poor. This foundation gives grants for education, public health and other worthy causes around the world to help the needy.

5)  T. Boone Pickens
Thomas Boone Pickens Jr is well known as takeover mogul who made is fortune in hedge fund management. He has donated generously to the American Red Cross and to other charities.

6) J. K. Rowling
As the author of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling is reported to be wealthier even than the Queen of England. But Rowling also has a generous heart, and having come from difficult circumstances herself, she has used part of her fortune to help the needy. Her charity, the Volant Charitable Trust, helps poor women and children. Another of her charities, One Parent Families, is dedicated to helping single parents.

7) Jeff Skoll
The founding president of eBay, Jeff Skoll is another millionaire who gives money to the needy through his Skoll Foundation.

8) George Kaiser
Kaiser made his fortune in oil, real estate and banking. The George Kaiser Family Foundation gives money to fight against child poverty and also to support social services and help the local economy in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

9) Michael Dell
Michael Dell founded the computer company of the same name, and he and his wife have given generously to support Hurricane Katrina victims, as well as to alleviate poverty in the US and abroad.

10) Warren Buffet
Last but certainly not least, billionaire investor Warren Buffet has donated money to the needy not only by contributing to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but also through several of the Buffet family foundations.
