Homeowners have many choices when it comes to maintaining their lush green lawns throughout the seasons including hiring a lawn care service, riding a lawn lawn-mower, pushing a gas or electric powered lawn mower or using the time tested and worthy reel lawn lawn-mower. Reel lawn mowers are also known as push lawn-mowers. They do not use gas or electric only human power. Land owners who have large pieces of property generally do not look to push a reel lawn mower across vast expanses nor do those who have many trees growing on their property. Reel lawn lawn-mowers are perfect for those who have smaller pieces of property. Knowing which reel mower offers the most for your money is a huge part of the decision making process.

The Benefits of a Reel Lawn lawn-mower

They are better for the environment than mowers that emit pollution.

They are quiet, so quiet you can mow your lawn at 5 o’clock in the morning or at midnight and never disturb the neighbors.

They serve a dual purpose – you get some exercise while your lawn is cut.

Reel lawn-mowers are much less expensive than gas or electric powered mowers.

They are safer to use than a powered machine that has a fast spinning, sharp blade – great choice of you have kids that are willing to help with outdoor maintenance.

No gas means no trips to the gas station to fill a gas can, lug it back and fill the gas tank.

No electric cords to trip over or accidently cut.

No maintenance costs – once you purchase a reel lawn-mower, there is nothing else to buy for upkeep.

The Drawbacks of a Reel Lawn Mower

The grass cutting is all on your power.

Grass requires more frequent cutting to keep it at an easy to cut, manageable height.

Small twigs, leaves and other debris needs to be raked up and removed from the lawn before cutting the grass with a push type lawn-mower.

Fiskars 6201 18-Inch StaySharp Max Push Reel Lawn Mower – Overall Best

Fiskars meant stay sharp when it named this lawn lawn-mower because the blades do stay sharp.

This model is much easier to push than expected. It really doesn’t take a lot of force to push the Fiskars mower over the grass due to a technology they developed and named InertiaDrive.

Although most reel mowers simply cannot power through small twigs – the Fiskars StaySharp can. The lawn-mower has blades that are much thicker than competitor’s models which makes cutting through taller grass a breeze. Typically, the cutting blades on most reel mowers will become jammed with the extra amounts of grass and twigs, but the Fiskars StaySharp does not.

Another very important benefit to this model is the blades do not require seasonal sharpening as most reel mowers do. The blades remain sharp for a very long time.

The wheel design allows the user to get very close to the edge of the grass. Many reel mowers leave a 3 to 4 inch strip next to fences, curbs, foundations, sheds and other edges. Fiskars designed this model with inset wheels so you can get right to the edge of the grass.

Fiskars offers an adjustable cutting height adjustment. The height adjusts: The StaySharp Max goes between 1 to 4 inches, The StaySharp Plus adjusts between 1.5- to 4-inches and the StaySharp between 1.5- to 3.5-inches.

Also available on the Max model is an attachable grass catcher, which is very convenient.

The Fiskars reel mowers come with a warranty either two or three years depending on the model.

The Fiskars StaySharp is the best bet for a reel mower.

Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower – Nice Second Place

The Scotts push mower is a good runner up, but lacks in a few areas. You cannot get a close edge cut with this mower. Because of the wheel design you will have a three to four inch strip of grass next to fences, foundations, curbs and other edges.

This push mower works really well on flat land without any twigs or large leaves. You have to keep your grass neat and trimmed because it won’t make it through taller grassy areas. If you are able to muscle your way through, you will probably jam it up. It does cut a nice wide 20 inch path through the lawn.

It’s very easy to push, needing no more muscle than other well made brands.

The Scotts Classic is a nice basic, no frills push mower.

Overall not a bad choice.

Brill 78371 Razorcut 38 15-Inch Reel Push Lawn Mower – A Good Choice for Small Yards

The Brill Razorcut 38 is a very nice, German engineered reel lawnmower. It is a good choice for a small to medium lawn.

The reels are adjustable from .7 inches to 1.8 inches, which is a decent height range.

This mower cuts a path 15.2 inches. It cannot get close to edges such as foundations, curbs, fences, flowers, shrubs or other edges because of the wheel design.

The blades do stay sharp for a very long time, making it very convenient not to have to take the lawnmower in for sharpening frequently.

The biggest drawback of this mower is that it does not handle tall grasses well at all. It also does not handle leaves or twigs. You will jam up the mower and have to really put some serious muscle into mowing. If your yard is small, nice and flat, without trees this lawnmower will definitely do the job.

The Brill mower works really well on short grass that is maintained often. Keeping lawns neat and trimmed is a breeze with this model.
