Mixed Martial Arts : Top promotions 2014
UFC, Bellator, WSOF, OneFC, RFA
Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is a popular combat sport in which striking and grappling techniques are used. Sometimes MMA is also called free fight, vale tudo or cage fight.
Although MMA is a relatively new sport, there are already hundreds of national and international MMA organizations worldwide. Most organizations use the "Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts", adopted by all state athletic commissions in the United States.
Let's have a closer look at the top dogs:
I. UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)
The UFC is the most popular MMA organization. Their first event was held in Denver, Colorado in 1993. Nowadays UFC events are scheduled in different continents and can be viewed worldwide in over 100 countries. Some events are free to watch, others are on pay-per-view television.
Over 70 percent of the top fighters in the different weight categories are contracted by the UFC. Current UFC stars include Jon "Bones" Jones, Anderson Silva, Cain Velasquez, Jose Aldo and female fighter "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey.
Since it's also the best paying promotion, to get a UFC contract is every MMA fighter's dream.
II. Bellator MMA
Bellator is generally considered to be the second best MMA promotion. It is a US based organization, founded in 2008. Their championship format is original and highly entertaining. To get a title shot for the belt you first have to win a four-man or eight-man tournament.
Their top signings include Eddie Alvarez, Michael Chandler and Pat Curran.
Almost all of their most events are free to watch on US television and online.
III. WSOF (World Series of Fighting)
World Series of Fighting is a fairly new MMA organization, founded in 2012. This US based organization is expanding rapidly and is becoming an international promotion. New branches are created worldwide.
Well known fighters on their roster are Marlon Moraes, Rousimar Palhares and female star Jessica Aguilar.
IV. ONE FC (One Fighting Championship)
One Fighting Championship, founded in 2011, is the biggest Asian MMA promotion. It is seen as the successor of the once hugely popular but now defunct Pride FC. One FC doesn't strictly follow the Unified Rules of MMA. Knees to a downed opponent, for instance, are legal.
V. RFA (Resurrection Fighting Alliance)
The Resurrection Fighting Alliance is the unofficial feeder league of the UFC. This US based promotion was founded in 2011 and focuses on young, talented fighters. Champions of the RFA almost always get a UFC contract.
If you want to check out the new kids on the MMA block RFA is a good place to start.
