Top 5 Reasons Why You Will Succeed As An Adult Student

Making the decision to return to school as an adult student to get a degree can seem like a daunting task. Indeed, fear has played a large role in preventing many people from taking the plunge. If you are interested in getting your high school diploma from online high school courses, getting a diploma from an online college or returning to a bricks and mortar traditional university but think you are too old then think again! Timing for an adult student is precious. Coupled with work, family and social obligations there doesn't seem to be enough time in the day. Trust me, there is and you will succeed! The Top 5 Reasons Why You Will Succeed is because you have already succeeded in life in mastering the things that are truly important as a student to be successful-and none of them are academic!

Reason 1: Time management skills

For years, you have already been juggling a career and home life, possibly mixing in a dog, kids and soccer practice along the way. As an adult, you know the importance of quiet time and how to budget your time to stay on top of your tasks. Younger students do not possess this discipline and do not have the sense or willpower to say no to distractions.

Reason 2: The fear factor

As a younger person, you may recall the fear and dread you felt when speaking before the class or delivering a presentation. Death seemed worse. In your adult years, you have probably had cause to speak in front of a group many times either at your child's school, church, extra-curricular activities function, work or weddings. It is all relevant experience. Possibly you have been called into the bosses' office on a bad day. That is fear. Speaking in front of a group of college freshmen…not so much!

Reason 3: Life smarts

Okay, so you may not have picked up on mitochondrial DNA in your day-to-day life, but I will guarantee you that you will have already experience myriad topics that are covered on the collegiate level. It is fun to sit in business classes and discuss retirement plans, mortgages, certificates of deposit, re-financing, taxes and other topics that you have probably had more experience with than you care to remember.

Reason 4: Motivation

This is crucial! The first time around, many students are not motivated. Once they get a taste of what awaits them in the real world, they often change their minds in a hurry. Perhaps you have mounting bills and a dead end job. You are trying to better yourself and make a better life for you and your family. This will cause you to stick with it and do a good job, because you know it is going to lead to good things.

Reason 5: Cost

It is easy to skip classes and let assignments slide when someone else is footing the bill. When mommy and daddy keep the gravy train rolling under the worst of times, why try harder? You, however, see the direct connection between class work and the tuition bill. Getting the most for your dollar will be an important goal. With this in mind, you will use class time and resources wisely because you understand that money does not grow on trees. Student loans and grants are still available to many adult students as well. If you have previous loans outstanding, you can always worry about student loan consolidation later - after you are earning more money with your new degree!

This is not some pipe dream. You can do this. I speak from experience. I returned to school to finish my degree 18 years after I started it. I am nearly done now and have completed 47 hours since returning. Straight A's so far. I am not the smartest guy in the classroom, but I understand the Top 5 Reasons why I am there and what I hope to accomplish. My fear level is down and motivation is up! Enroll for online college courses or talk to the registrar at the college or university of your choice. It is never too late. Best of luck to you in your endeavor.
