Top 5 Not-So-Sexy Female Characters in Comics

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 3 4

In a time where media in general is blamed for diminishing women to a role of sexy objects, it is interesting to note that not all comics/cartoons/manga female characters are sexy or even cute.

1. Olive Oyl in Popeye

by E. C. Segar, started in 1929, from USA

On the internet, Olive Oyl is often mentioned as the ugliest female character in comics. It may be an exaggeration but one has to admit she is not the most sexy character either.

2. Peppermint Patty in Peanuts

by Charles M. Schulz, started in 1950, from USA

Actually, to find female characters that are not so sexy, you don't need to look too far. Even in huge success comic strip Peanuts, female characters are far from being sexy and gorgeous. One example is Peppermint Patty.

3. Irma in Garfield

by Jim Davis, started in 1978, from USA

Garfield is another wonderful comic strip and it is also avoiding sexy sulfurous women characters. The best Garfield strips are often the ones that include Irma, the waitress at the restaurant Jon and Garfield are regularly eating at.

4. Mafalda

by Quino (real name Joaquín Salvador Lavado) started in 1964, from Argentine

Less known than the previous comics, Mafalda is quite popular in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Mafalda is a girl full of thoughts and philosophy. You could not have expected her to be sexy as she is relatively young but she could have been a bit more cute (even though, through her personality, she is very cute).

5. Batako san in Anpanman

by Takashi Yanase, started in 1973, from Japan

Although unknown outside Asia, Anpanman is one of the most popular manga for young children in Japan. One of the character, called Batako san ("butter girl") deserves her place in this list as some people may even mistake her for a male character.
