Workouts for Women Who Think They Have No Time

I confess, I love to exercise!  Each morning, my alarm goes off at 5:15.  I groggily roll out of bed, change into my workout clothes and head downstairs.  After having my much needed cup of coffee, I select the DVD I feel that I have the energy for, gather any needed equipment and get started.

This routine is not for everyone, I know.  I started exercising before the dawn’s early light when my twins were three.  They had given up their nap, so my daily exercise routine, which was to get on the treadmill or popping in a DVD while they were napping, was no more.

I did not dive into this routine easily, that is for sure!  I started slowly, working out for 20 minutes, and gradually increased it to one hour.  It was the only time of day that was mine, although my two early risers loved to sit on the couch and watch mommy exercise.  

Seven years later, it is simply a habit.  No matter what time I go to bed, I get up at 5:15 to exercise.  If I do not, I just feel “off” during the day. While I could exercise after my kids go to school, that would cut into my writing time, as well as my ability to sub at the preschool when I am called in to work at the last minute.  

I have dozens of exercise videos in my collection.  The following are the ones that are my favorites that not only never get boring for me, they work!

Yes, You Have Time!

Many of my family members are overweight.  Not the kind of weight that crept up with age, but morbidly obese.  With a  health history of heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer and diabetes on both sides of my family tree, I am motivated to keep these health issues at bay.  Eating right (most of the time) and exercise are a no fail 1-2 combination that truly works. 

My mood is better after I have worked out.  Those who exercise understand that our bodies are meant to be active, not sedentary.  My body and my mind feel so much better after a workout.

And, like my late Nana, who was dressed to the nines until her death at age 97, I will admit a bit of vanity is part of my motivation.  I like how my clothes fit.

So get a good pair of workout sneakers and let's get started!

The Firm - Total Body Toner

The Firm workouts have been around since the late 1980's. Originally an hour or more long, they are now anywhere between 20-40 minutes in length, depending on which DVD you are using.  I love The Total Body Workout because it does just that-works out every part of your body.  Biceps, triceps, deltoids, quads, and abs-not one single part of your body is missed.  There are even a few segments of HIIT training-High Intensity Interval Training.  This gets your heart pumping and helps you burn more calories. 

You need three kinds of weights to do this workout-light, medium and heavy.  What those numbers mean depends on your fitness level. Newbies do not need to use any weights, and like all Firm workouts, one of the instructors is doing the beginner level for you to follow.

I rotate my exercise DVDs so my muscles do not get used to the same repetitive motion. This helps with maintaining your fitness level. If you do the same exercises over and over again, your body gets used to the motion and it won't get the same benefits as it did when you first started the exercise routine.

Using different sized weights will help you get tight and toned. This is the perfect beginner set because the weights are not too heavy.

Jillian Michaels 6 Week 6 Pack

This workout DVD is not for those just venturing into the world of exercise, even though she has beginner modifications for every move.  Jillian Michaels 6 Week Six Pack is 30 minutes of pure physical work (or torture-take your pick), as she does not stop for more then fifteen seconds between exercises.  It is a frenzy of core exercises that are a combination of standing abs, on your back abdominal movements, and lots of plank work.

I can tell you that it works. I started doing it every day for a month, then gradually went to 2-3 days a week.   Jillian says that her moves are “no joke” and she is right.  Because I have some injuries, I have to modify some moves or not do certain ones, so I make substitutions.

All you need is one three pound weight and a lot of perseverance and determination.

If you want toned and tight abs, this is the workout for you. It is not easy, but if you stick with it, you will see the results you desire.

Leslie Sansone Walk to the Hits Party

Years ago, I remember seeing infomercials for Leslie Sansone’s Walk at Home Program.  Walking was my favorite form of exercise at that time, but inclement weather would cancel my outings, especially when pushing a double stroller was involved!  

I bought the program and have been hooked ever since.

Although I have owned many Leslie Sansone workout DVDs, this one is my favorite.  There are songs from the past that just get me feeling good as I exercise. She uses real men and women of all body types, so you are not staring at fit people twenty years younger than you are as you exercise. The people working out with you are your peers.

Her DVDs are one of my best writing tools.  Unlike my body sculpting videos, where I have to pay attention to my form or risk injury, when I am walking with Leslie and her crew, my mind wanders and start writing articles in my head (like this one!)  I still work up a good sweat and get my endorphins going.
