There were many top R & B songs in the 90s that touched our hearts as we grooved along to the beat. With that being said, many of the R & B love songs acted as the theme songs to our lives. Even though the R & B artists who were solo were also great, you can't ignore the indescribable energy of the group acts. Take a trip down memory lane with me as we reminisce about the Top R & B Male Groups of the 90s.
I figured since "Top Female R & B Groups of the 90s" was so successful, I decided to write this article to be fair. In 1988, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary formed the chart topping vocal powerhouse group known as Boyz II Men. They burst onto the scene with their number one hit song “End of the Road” and rocketed to international fame with hits such as “I'll Make Love to You”, “One Sweet Day” and “Water Runs Dry” just to name a few. Presently, Nathan, Wanya and Shawn still continue performing as a trio and have just recently performed on “the Sing Off”, a show on NBC.
The next group in this article that I wanted to mention is platinum selling artists, 112. This Atlanta-based group of bad boys were eventually taken under the wing of Sean Combs and had hit records like “I'll Be Missing You”, “Love Me”, “It's Over Now”, “Cupid” and “Peaches and Cream”. Even though these gentlemen have separated as a group, they are forever known for their smooth stage personas, tight vocals and innovative dance moves.
In the early 1990s, Teddy Riley, the creator of “New Jack Swing”, combined powers with Thomas Taliaferro and founded BLACKstreet. Riley recruited Dave Hollister, Mark Middleton & Eric Williams and had hit records like “No Diggity” and “Don't Leave Me”. These manly men even scored a hit record on the Rugrats Movie Soundtrack titled “Take Me There” featuring fellow recording artist, Mya.
Another quartet of talented young performers in the 90s was JoDeCi. Their aggressive vocals and swagger, eventually captured the attention of Sean Combs and spawned hits like “Come and Talk to Me”, “Stay” and “Forever My Lady”. Eventually after the band’s splinter, brothers K-Ci and Jo Jo forged their own duo, with hits such as “Life” and “All My Life”.
With all this talk about R & B Male Groups, you can forget my favorite group, Dru Hill. Dru Hill was one of the flashiest and flamboyant R&B acts of the 90s. Nokio recruited Sisqo, Jazz, Woody, and Nokio and formed R&B's flashiest and most flamboyant acts of the 90s. Once formed, this Maryland based vocal band had hits like “Never Make a Promise”, “In My Bed”, “Five Steps”, and “How Deep Is Your Love for Me”. After their separation, the band reformed and continues to perform as a band.
