Many different variations of the spy pen exists on today’s every increasing and expanding market. But none of these products are more successful than the 4gb spy pen range. Produced by over 40 companies it is the widest selling and most popular of all the products of its type. We ask why and what it is about this product that makes it the spy pen people want to own.

The first and most obvious place to start is by examining how it differs from the other products of its type. Like the majority of others it contains a DVR recorder that usually records in the avi format. This makes it footage compatible with most playback devices you can find on out there, from cell phones to pc’s.

All the products of this type are of a set size and all come with the standard working pen so we can say with confidence that it’s not this either. The camera lens is also of a set quality and any variation in quality is available over the whole range. This leaves us with only two possibilities.

The 4gb spy pen camera will record approximately 3-5 hours worth of footage. In our experience the quality resolution all tend to be roughly the same over the whole range so you will normally find this closer to 5 hours. It’s worth noting that this length whilst reasonable does not stand out from the page so to speak. If they told me 10-12 hours then yes, I would be suitably impressed. But 4-5 hours leaves me wondering why a device with this weakness in length of recording sells so well.

We don’t have to look hard to find the answer. When we look towards to last and possibly most important feature of the spy pen we find our answer, we are of course talking about the in built power supply. This comes in the form of a built in battery pack. The battery pack due to its need to be so small can only last for a mere 3 hours 4 at a push. This immediately answers the question why the 4gb model sells so well.

The battery life and the memory life almost perfectly match up. They provide the perfect balance, until its possible to increase the capacity of both of these then the 4gb makes sense to be the most mass produced and the most sold of all the spy pens online.

Rechargeable on the move variations are being developed but this still does not allow mass recording over the batteries life span. I would love to see 8gb version take center stage as it offers the user more possibilities. Until they can expand the power life however this remains wishful thinking.
