Founded by former PayPal employees Steve Chen, Jawed Karim and Chad Hurly in 2005, YouTube has taken the Internet by storm. For those young enough to remember when MTV first became popular and what it did for music videos and careers like Michael Jackson, Sting, and Madonna, you can relate when think about what has happened with YouTube. YouTube is a video sharing community of ordinary people who want to share videos about themselves, their families, their interests, events in their lives, recent discoveries, you name it.
Much like many of the videos on YouTube, it didn't take long for the concept and the website to go viral. YouTube remained independent from 2005 to 2006 and then Google bought YouTube for $1.6 billion in 2006. YouTube started out as just a place where ordinary people could share their videos, but because of its tremendous success, the mainstream have their sites on YouTube as well. That's where people go to watch their videos. In this days of mobile devices, and with people always on the go, more and more people get their news, and entertainment off their computers, cell phones or other mobile device. This is another reason why YouTube went viral so quickly and why everyone who is anyone (News organizations, Corporations, Artists and so forth) has a profile or channel. That is where they will find their target audience. YouTube is so amazing, even people with diseases like Cancer, AIDS, Diabetes have found an outlet to voice their experiences, pain and triumphs with others. This also also where birth announcements are made and videos uploaded for the world to celebrate in your joy.
The top videos on YouTube are interesting because it shows what people watch most often. This year's top 10 is a mixture of both top recording artists and normal everyday people. Where else but YouTube can a normal everyday person get as much publicity as famous artist with a multimillion dollar record contract? This is what makes YouTube so phenomenal! People can look up videos of their family members who live in another state or country, while at the same time, they can watch videos of their favorite recording artists. Here is this year's (2011) top ten most watched videos on YouTube.
