Tourism Events in Portsmouth - Feb 2012

By Edited Nov 7, 2016 2 8

With the January sales over and the Christmas decorations away its time to look forward to what is happening in the Portsmouth area in February 2012 for when you are still looking for things to entertain the children, keep the partner happy or are otherwise bored. It's also worth remembering that schools in the Portsmouth area have their half terms during the weeks of 13 - 17 February or 21-25 February; so there are a few events for the younger generations.

Portsmouth is located on the South Coast in Hampshire, easily accessible by road (on the M27), rail (frequent services provided by South West Trains, Southern and First Great Western) and coach (Megabus, National Express and Greyhound UK all serve central Portsmouth)

Sport

One of the draws for sports fans is the football with Fratton Park being the home of Portsmouth FC. There are two home league matches scheduled for Portsmouth and the atmosphere is lively but safe:

01 February - Portsmouth vs Hull
14 February - Portsmouth vs Ipswich

Music

Besides the usual city nightclub facilities there are a number of music venues in Portsmouth that offer both local and multi-national acts. Some of the highlights that are on the playlist for Portsmouth venues this month include:

03 February - The UK Chilli Peppers; The Cellars, Eastney
04 February - Bon Jovi Experience; Kings Theatre, Albert Road
09 February - The Royal Marines Band; Royal Marines Museum, Southsea
14 February - Ahab; The Cellars, Eastney
21 February - Kaiser Chiefs; Portsmouth Guildhall
28 February - Rebecca Ferguson; Portsmouth Guildhall

The Cellars is an intimate music venue in an adapted pub in Eastney which now houses an extensive in-house live performance venue for a range of music, comedy and open mic events; and sits nicely on the corner of a quiet residential area.

The Wedgewood Rooms is a venue for the up and coming as well as local bands and have previously contributed tot he exposure of Kasabian and Travis among others.

Local

Many of the theatres offer local media groups the chance to showcase their talents.

03&04 February - Intermezzo - Chichester College Dance Students; New Theatre Royal, Guildhall Walk
11 February - Havant Chamber Orchestra; Fernham Hall, Fareham
14-18 February - Annie - Portsmouth Players; Kings Theatre, Albert Road
01-03 March - Die Fladermaus by J Strauss - University of Portsmouth Drama and Music Society

Participatory

There is nothing to get people involved than a range of events that need a little bit of active participation. With the school half-term there will be a bias towards child-based activities, but some of the highlights include:

04 February - Theatre Tours; Kings Theatre, Albert Road
05 February - Chinese New Year Celebrations; Gunwharf Quays
04&05 February - Make and Decorate Your Own Mary Rose (for children); Historic Dockyard
12 February - Coastal Half Marathon; Southsea and the Seafront

25 February - The British Heart Foundation South Downs Way Challange; Queen Elizabeth Country Park (about 20 minutes outside Portsmouth)
25&26 February - "Eye-opener" Tours of the Mary Rose Museum, Historic Dockyard

Theatre

Portsmouth is blessed with a number of excellent stages around the city and just beyond its limits. These can offer a range of theatre performances as well as being the usual hot bed for tribute bands, pantomimes and psychics who can talk to the dead. Portsmouth itself has 2 traditional theatres; the Kings Theatre in Albert Road, Southsea; and the New Theatre Royal on the edge of Portsmouth's pub district on Guildhall Walk. All of performances listed taking place this month are at the Kings Theatre:

07-11 February - David Copperfield
14-18 February - Annie; Portsmouth Players
20&21 February - Fame; Miltoncross School
22 February - An Evening with Paul Daniels
25 February - The House of Burlesque

Portsmouth's New Theatre Royal, Guildhall Walk, do have a few performances on during February, celebrating Chinese New Year with a stage show on 05 February and have a half-termtreat for children in Great Gran's Great Games on 14 February.

Portsmouth's St Peter's Theatre, Fraser Road, Southsea offers a late Pantomime in the Snow Queen, 05 to 07 February.

Dickens Bi-Centenary

With Portsmouth being his birthplace, the city is celebrating what would have been Charles Dickens' 200th Birthday on 07 February 1812; with a range of events both organised by the Portsmouth City Council and private organisations. Although Dickens spent very little of his early years in Portsmouth having been moved to Bloomsbury in 1815, his birthplace in Old Commercial Road though has been preserved by Portsmouth City Council circa 1809; something which Dickens' apparently failed to find in 1866 on a visit to Portsmouth. Usually only open April to September, the museum will be open this year from 28 January Tuesday to Sunday and on Bank Holiday Mondays

05&07 February - Free Entrance to Dickens Birthplace Museum, Old Commercial Road
07 February - Simon Callows reads Dickens; New Theatre Royal, Guildhall Walk
11&12 February - "Meet The Guides" and artefact handling; Dickens Birthplace Museum, Old Portsmouth Road
12 February - A Tale of One City; Portsmouth City Museum

Misc.

There are always events which do not fall into any category at all. This month in Portsmouth there are lectures, and .

02 February - University of Portsmouth Public Lectures - How do you ensure nobody is left behind in the switch to digital TV?; Richmond Building, Portland Street, Portsmouth (Seat Bookings required)

As a real fan of Charles Dickens, I love the Dickens celebration information. It is too far away for me to get there, but just knowing it is the bi-centenary will have me looking for information on it. Wish it were closer to Texas!

I was a tad disappointed that I had very few images for the article. I must really take a day to go around and get some if I am continuing the with articles.
