Transforming a Television into Wall Art
The television has proven that it is here to stay, and as it has wormed its way into every family room, living room and bedroom, it is still one of the least attractive furnishings in a room. However, they have made some pretty big improvements in the last few years with the advent of flat screen TVs. Though they have improved, they have also grown, and they are still a point of design contention in most homes. While many people hide their television behind a curtain or in a cabinet, the design of the flat screen also lets you hide your television right in plain sight by incorporating it into a wall design as wall art.
Group Other Art with the TV
While you won't find a TV in the framed art section of a art decor store, one of the easiest ways to pull a television in to a room's design is to add it to a grouping of artwork hanging on the wall. By hanging art and perhaps a wall hanging candle holders around the television, you are relating the TV to a group of artwork. So when a person enters the room, instead of seeing a big TV hanging on the wall, they will see a focal point wall filled with artwork. Upon closer inspection, they may notice your television set, but the TV did not detract or interrupt the design flow of the room. Surrounding the TV with artwork allowed it to become invisible as it blended into the décor of the room.
Adding a Floating Shelf for Interest
Another thing that you can do to give your television interest as well as anchor it in the room is to mount is on a floating shelf. Of course the TV is mounted to the wall, and so is the shelf, but it looks like the TV is resting on the shelf and leaning against the wall. You can add a photo collection to the shelf some other decorative item like plants or candles to add interest to the display. If you have a large wall you may want to add a couple of other floating shelves with artwork mounted in the same way as the television for a really striking wall display. By adding a shelf and displaying other décor around the television, it effectively incorporates the television into the décor of the room instead of just looking like a huge TV hanging on a wall.
Architectural Elements Distract from the Television
You can also make the television blend into the room by blending it with an architectural feature in the room. For example, if you have decorative wainscoting in the room, you can mount a section of it to the wall and frame it in trim to match the room and hang your television on it. By relating the TV to the wainscoting you help incorporate the TV into the room's design. You can also simply use your wood molding to frame your television to make it look like it belongs on the wall. Using wall paper, shelving, columns or any other architectural element of the room to surround the TV will help to include it in the room's décor and make it less noticeable.

Something I find very interesting and that could also qualify as a tip for transforming a television into wall art, is to create a wall of art that duplicates the look of the flat screen television. Only switching on the television will then reveal which presentation is in fact the television.
Something else I also read about some time ago, and that can also be a nice idea, is to hide the flat screen tv in plain sight, using a 2-way mirror. This could have a massive effect on the room and could be duplicated as well by hanging three mirrors of the same size next to each other, the middle one of course being the 2-way mirror that only reveals the television when it is switched on.
Hiding a television in plain sight behind a mirror is also a wonderful idea, and I am intrigued by a wall of flatscreens as art where only one of them is an actual television. Goog thinking!
