Trauma healing, Trauma symptoms and treatment

By | 1 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Trauma is a term that is typically used to describe the after effects of an event that caused some physical or psychological impact leading to emotional problems. Well the fact is that anyone can experience a trauma at any time in his or her life.

When does a trauma happen?

A trauma is usually a result of events that are extraordinarily stressful. These events are bad enough to damage a person's sense of security and leave him or her feeling entirely helpless and extremely vulnerable.

In most cases people think that a trauma comes out of an event that causes an actual threat to their life. Well the truth is that a trauma can result from almost any situation that may leave you overwhelmed, even if there is no actual physical harm.

When it comes to trauma the objective facts do not matter, the only thing that matters is the affected person's subjective emotional experience. The more afraid and helpless a person feels in an unfortunate event, the more likely he or she is to be traumatized.

What are the symptoms of a trauma?

Trauma usually has a lot of symptoms, which can be both emotional as well as physical.

Emotional symptoms: one of the most common symptoms of a trauma is shock. People who are in a shock may also get disillusioned and may also suffer from disbelief. Usually trauma leaves the affected people very angry and irritated. Such people also suffer from mood swings. Sometimes these people suffer from a guilt or shame and tend to blame themselves. They also tend to feel sad and hopeless.

Confusion and a difficulty in concentration are other common symptoms. Being anxious and withdrawn as well as having a felling of being numb or disconnected is also a common symptom of people who have undergone a trauma.

Physical symptoms: Most of the people who suffer from a trauma tend to develop insomnia and if they get the smallest amount of sleep they are plagued by recurring nightmares. Such people also experience a racing heartbeat as well as a variety of pains and aches all over the body. The people who undergo a trauma also seem to be fatigued and they also experience a muscular tension in their body.

Treatment for Trauma

The treatment for trauma is really complex but is also very efficient. It usually involves processing the various feelings and emotions related to a trauma. The treatment also focuses on regulating the strong emotions and building or rebuilding the ability to trust. It also takes care of the 'fight or flight' energy remaining in the body after going through a traumatic experience.

There are three types of therapies recommended for dealing with a trauma:

· Somatic Experiencing

· Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

· Cognitive-behavioral therapy
