As a stone product, travertine is a popular and favorite option to be used inside the home or outside the backyard or garden. This classic Roman stone has been in existence for centuries as a material for tiling and building. As a matter of fact, the Roman Coliseum is mostly constructed out of travertine and not of marble as believed by most people.

Travertine belongs to the family of sedimentary rock and it is formed as the water in hot spring pools evaporate and layers of minerals are left behind. These minerals give the stone its great colors. The base color of a travertine tile is soft brown but because of the added minerals several accenting colors are found in every tile.

Travertine tiles have many uses in the home. The stone gives the floor very pleasing tiles and it's popular for entryways. The tiles should be sealed when installed on the floor so that they are protected against stains. Since it's a sedimentary rock, it is usually composes of little voids and tiny air pockets that let the staining product get into the structure if the surface if unsealed. The tiles provide a hard and durable surface so it will surely last a long time.

The tiles are also popular choices for countertop and worktop coverings and back splashes. They are also used as décor by becoming trim and accent pieces. A great use of tiles is to transform the whole bathroom including the shower area to give it an elegant and classic look.

Travertine pavers stones are also popular patio floors in the garden and even as stepping stones in the garden in order to make sure that your feet stay dry. Since pavers are made of stone, they are great to stand up against any climate but they should be sealed to keep away moisture that is formed in the area when there is freezing weather. The moisture tends to seep in and freeze which can break the tiles.

Travertine tiles are a worthy investment to make your home look better if you have plans of remodeling or renovating it. And they are really easy to work with also. Unlike marble, which is very hard and dense, the Travertine stone is easy to cut with a tile saw. They are also much lighter than marble since their minerals have not been compacted to the same form as the marble stone.

When set in a good gravel base you can be assured that your paver walkway will last a long time.
