Treating Fibromyalgia With Soma
In 1990,
the American College of Rheumatology, the official body of doctors who
treat arthritis and related conditions, finally legitimized Fibromyalgia
in the medical community by presenting its criteria for diagnosing it.
This mysterious medical condition is diagnosed when a person displays
a widespread pain that is present for at least three months, or pain
in at least 11 of 18 tender-point sites.
Fibromyalgia
syndrome or FMS is an arthritis-related condition that is characterized
by generalized muscular pain and fatigue. The term "fibromyalgia"
means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. This condition is
referred to as a "syndrome" because it's a set of signs and symptoms
that occur together. Although fibromyalgia is a relatively recent term,
this syndrome has been known by several other names over the past years,
including soft tissue rheumatism, fibrositis and non-articular rheumatism.
Muscle Relaxants are pain medications commonly used to relieve suffering caused by numerous illnesses, including fibromialgia. They help to ease tense muscles and reduce muscle spasms, thereby providing relief to many fibromyalgia patients. These muscle relaxants do not work by curing the source of the pain, instead they help mask pain, enabling a person to go on with their daily life. Like benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants also work on the brain. These medications work to reduce the brain's ability to sense pain, allowing a person to relax. They also block the pain sensations that the body's nerves send to the brain.
Carisoprodol also known Soma is a muscle relaxant designed to ease stiffness,
pain, discomfort, and muscle injury. It is also excellent at reducing
muscle spasms in fibromyalgia patients. Like other muscle relaxants,
Carisprodol works by blocking the pain sensations in the brain. Few
studies are available regarding the effectiveness of this muscle relaxant,
though it is generally thought to be as effective as cyclobenzaprine.
However, it is still advisable to consult with a health care provider
before taking any of these muscle relaxants.
For fibromyalgia
sufferers, aside from medications, it is also recommendable to get into
aerobic exercise, such as swimming and walking, which improves muscle
fitness and reduces muscle pain and tenderness. Heat and massage may
also give short-term pain relief for fibromyalgia.

Soma works. I've taken several different types of muscle relaxers for chronic neck pain and Soma works the best. Unfortunately, doctors don't like to prescribe it since it can be habit-forming. My doc said she knows of another doc who works with Fibro patients and he swears by Soma.
