Troubleshooting Problems with Your Mobile Broadband Connection

By Edited Jun 26, 2016 0 0

If you've got a mobile internet connection, you already know how simple it is to use and run. By just plugging a SIM card into some hardware and plugging that hardware into your computer, then you can have internet access wherever there's a 3G signal from your chosen mobile service provider. Generally, mobile broadband services are pretty fool proof, and there's not too much that can go wrong. But if you're experiencing a problem with your mobile broadband connection, then check out some of the solutions below...

How Do I Know that a Dongle Will Work on My Computer?

The truth is that you're probably not going to have a problem with this. As long as your computer has a USB port and you're running pretty recent software, you'll be fine. Anything from Windows XP up for PC users is going to work, and Mac users will probably need at least OS X. You don't even need a lot of free memory to run a dongle. The only people who might have a problem are Linux users, in which case you'll need to ask you mobile service provider.

When I Plug in My Dongle it Doesn't Install...

Sometimes this does happen. If your computer has more than one USB port, try plugging the dongle into the other port or ports before doing anything else. If that doesn't work, then plug the dongle in and go to My Computer on your laptop. Find the icon for your dongle (if there's no icon, there's a problem with your computer and its USB ports, not with the dongle, and you might need to take your laptop to be serviced), and right click on it. Choose the “explore” option and look for a file that's called something like “Install” or “autorun.exe.” Double clicking on that file should run the install programme.

I'm Using a Mac, and I Can't Find My Network...

This is a common problem for Mac users and is easily fixable. First, make sure that the green light on your dongle is flashing, indicating that it is working. If it is, then you probably have the PIN code enabled on your SIM card, and your Mac can't access it. Take the SIM card out of your dongle and put it in any mobile phone. Then go to the settings menu on the mobile phone, and switch off the PIN code for the card. This is usually in a “security” menu on your phone, though you might need to look around for it.

I'm Having Problems Connecting to a Network...

Problems connecting to a network or slow mobile broadband speeds are almost always connected to poor network coverage. There is little that you can do about this. If your mobile service operator doesn't have good coverage in the area that you're in you may have slow internet or even no network at all. The only thing you can do is go somewhere else that has better coverage. Or switch mobile providers, if it's possible. It's a good idea to check a provider's coverage of your area online before signing up for a plan.
