What is the Blue Plum Festival?
What is this Blue Plum Festival? Let's begin by saying that it is a FREE, outdoor, art and music festival spanning 7 city blocks in the downtown section of Johnson City TN. and for the first time last year Sunday events were planned to the festive activities and record crowds were expected from over 80,000 more people who joined the local citizens for our first 3 day festival of the year. So grab your lawn chair and come on down, enjoy yourselves this Friday, Saturday & Sunday! Come and participate in the 5K run scheduled for Saturday morning as well as the Cornhole Toss Tournament.
"Friends of Olde Downtowne is a volunteer organization committed to providing a platform from which ideas can be shared, nurtured, and implemented into plans and projects which will improve and protect the historical legacy of downtown Johnson City. By sharing our time and talents, we are striving to improve the quality of our lives today and to preserve our historical legacy for future generations.
To this end Friends produces First Fridays, held the first Friday in March, April, May, July, August, September, October and of course, June, when First Friday becomes The Blue Plum Festival and takes place over three days rather than one evening."
How do we save the city...
Who would have ever thought that in just twelve short years what started as an experiment to help increase awareness and traffic to help revive a dying downtown would grow into this popular event that is looked upon with antiscipation by the local merchants and venders alike as well as the general public in increasing numbers since its initial meager inception many years ago? The crowds have steadily grown as have the number of craft exhibits and food vendors as each year the city closes down for the 1st weekend in June and people freely walk about the downtown area meandering from store to vendor to craft to stage performance and enjoying a most casual and leisure time of relaxation while listening to popular music. Entertainment is provided by local and nationally known Blue Grass as well as popular music groups.
The Tri-Cities of TN - Bristol, Kingsport & Johnson City
New events are added each year to draw more and more participation and interest. Strategically located in upper northeast Tennessee and bisected by two major interstate highways, Johnson City is also home to East Tennessee State University and Mountain Home Veterans Hospital and proudly boasts of being just one leg of the TriCities of Bristol and Kingsport which also have individual festivities planned throughout the year. I guess we better also make mention of Elizabethton TN just six miles away which is famous for its own Covered Bridge Festival being held next weekend.
