In recent months, Twitter has been taking the web by storm.

It has become one of the more popular social networks to date.

The concept is simple. Twitter asks a simple question: "What are you doing?"

It is based on a model of Following and Followers - people you get updates from (people you follow) and people who get your updates (your followers).

It has become a fantastic real time short messaging service that people all over the world use to share thoughts, web links, status updates, and the like.

There are Twitter clients for nearly every device and computing platform - from Windows and Mac OS to Linux, and iPhones, smartphones, Palm pilots, and more.

Twitter started as a private side project in March of 2006. It is a privately funded startup operation based in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, California.

The idea for Twitter came from Jack Dorsey - a man who had an interest in a simple question: "What are my friends up to right now?" Obviously, Jack wondered what could be created to answer that question in a fun, useful way.

When he brought the idea to his friends and colleagues, they decided that it would be an interesting concept to try and agreed to help him build a prototype for the system.

Twitter started off being funded by a group named "Obvious" based in San Francisco. With the funds, Jack and his crew built the first Twitter prototype. It was launched publicly in August of 2006.

Naturally, the service grew very quickly and became its own entity in no time. In May of 2007, Jack founded Twitter Incorporated.

Today, with about $55M in funding, Twitter has several million users and continues to grow faster than ever before.

In any given day, there are about 3 million Twitter messages - sometimes much higher.

Twitter.com receives 15M+ hits per day - not including updates sent from Twitter clients on computers and mobile devices all over the world.

If you haven't signed up for Twitter yet, you should! It's a fun way to stay in touch with your friends and meet loads of fascinating people.
