Types of Acne Treatment

Sulfur has been long used as an acne treatment. There are records of nineteenth century doctors using sulfur to treat acne. The twentieth century discovered Benzoyl Peroxide produces the same results on acne. Both chemicals have a drying effect. Since acne is caused by an excess of oils clogging the skin's pores, drying up the oils before they clog the pores seems like a good idea. Unfortunately these chemicals do not work for everyone.

In the search for a cure, Retinal A has been discovered to be affective for some acne sufferers. This is derived from the A vitamin and is also used to reduce wrinkles. This medication can be purchased over-the-counter where ever acne medications are sold. It is also available by prescription.

Laxatives have been used to treat acne. Cleansing the system of impurities helps to reduce the clogging of pores. Laxatives should be used sparingly though. Although they may produce good results on the acne, laxatives can cause many intestinal problems that are irreversible.

Every skin type is different but there are also different types of acne. To effectively treat acne fast, a patient may need to see a physician to get properly diagnosed. Papules, pustules, nodules and cysts are the four types of acne. Pustules are the most common acne and cysts are the most painful. Each type of acne is caused by different types of inflammation.

Sometimes the best cure is the simplest. Since acne is caused by an infected hair follicle which is caused by clogging due to an excess of oils, washing regularly and properly may be all that is needed to control acne. Our hands are one of the parts of the body that produce oils. Keeping the hands away from the face and body may prevent exposure to pore clogging oils. Using a wash cloth instead of the hands to wash the face is a good example of this. This may be effective for papule acne.

Cystic acne begins much deeper in the skin and it will be best to see a doctor. The doctor will probably prescribe an ointment as well as some type of oral medication. This way, the acne can be approached from both externally and internally. Cystic acne can be quite painful so there may be some type of painkiller taken too.

There are many forms of acne treatment. Simple changes in cleansing the skin may be all that is needed for some types of acne. Other types may respond better to topical ointments made from sulfur, benzoyl peroxide or retinal A. Severe, painful acne needs to be seen by a dermatologist. They will prescribe medications to deal with the acne from both inside the body and outside. They will also be able to help treat the pain associated with severe acne.
