Ultra modern freestanding baths
Freestanding Baths
Whilst freestanding baths tend to be associated with The Victorian Era, modern day versions are available which make use of contemporary materials, manufacturing techniques and technologies. We are no longer consigned to cast iron, copper or porcelain, which are expensive and extremely heavy. That said, if the antique look is something you are going for these will still be of great interest to you despite recent advances.
Nowadays double skinned acrylic versions are available which offer the same apparent depth and thickness as a fully porcelain or roll top cast iron traditional version. They are also lighter and less expensive. Free standing bathtubs can be made of stone, which is reasonably warm to the touch and is certainly different. These tubs are still heavy and expensive however.
Modern freestanding baths can have electrical technologies incorporated into their design, such as whirlpool functionality and an air spa feature. They are available in a range of colours and sizes and can have a roll top a flat top or no top at all, such as with the double skinned version. The flat top is where the perimeter is turned over (rather than rolled over) at a 90º angle. It really depends upon what you are after in terms of bathroom aesthetics. Some prefer the more ornate and softer look and feel of the roll top, where as others prefer sharp and sleek contours in a minimalist, flush bathroom or wet room.
Taps can be mounted on walls to further emphasise a minimalist bathroom and the freestanding tub can be positioned near to the wall where by the wall mounted taps over hang. This saves space at no expense to the aesthetics. It also facilitates the concealment of unsightly pipe work and avoids having pipe work sticking up through the floor in the centre of the room if you decided to remove or re-position a centre-stage freestanding tub. The bathroom taps can of course be mounted on the tub directly, either in the centre or at one end. Personally, I would go for a minimalist bathroom with taps set into the wall. I like the look and feel this promotes, but that’s what bathroom design is about. Infusing some of your own personality into it and enjoying every moment you spend in it, whether for bathing or relaxation.
