President Grant

There is so much history in Galena Illinois.  This is home of President Ulysses S. Grant who was the 18th President of the United States.  He served as President in 1869-1877.  When visiting Galena you can take advantage and view this President's home as well as several other buildings where his home is.  You can also see his wife's statue; Julia Dent Grant.  She was a beautiful lady and was also the First Lady.  This is definitely a great place to visit if you are in the area and you are interested in the history of this President and the area.  The cost to walk around the area is free but there is a suggested donation of $5 to take the tour for adults and kids are $3.  You can peak inside the home to get an idea on how they lived as everything is set up as it was back in the day.  The tour only takes place on certain days, so it is important to find out if the tour is going to be active when you plan on visiting.  The normal days the tour runs are Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Like most places, it is closed on major Holidays.  It is a tour that can be enjoyed by the entire family including children.  The tour guide will make it entertaining for people of all ages.  This will also make an awesome home school field trip.

Take a tour of the area around Preisdent Grant's house.

The roof of the building and obviously other things were done to this house since he lived in here as it has been well kept up.  The home has gone through several updates to ensure it stays in superb condition.  However back in the 1800's this home was viewed as a mansion and was definitely one of the largest houses in the area.  The tour is really fascinating as you can  take a look inside and see how they lived back in the day.  President Grant was definitely a man of his word.  After you take a look at the Grant house, feel free to walk a few blocks down and visit Grant Park where there are many historical stops and things to see.  This is right on the Galena river which leads to the Mississippi river.  You are able to take the bridge to walk across and visit the shops and historic downtown as well.  It is such a neat thing to see all of the homes that were built in the 1800's.  Many of these homes were preserved and people are still living there today.

There is so much history to be learned about in Galena Illinois.  It is definitely a neat place to travel to and visit.  If you are interested in the history of Galena, Grant or just the 1800 time period in general, you will not be disappointed.
