Understanding the Needs of the Elderly
Caring Elderly Loved Ones
When our aging parents and loved ones reach their "golden years", it's common for them to experience physical and mental limitations that make these years "not-so-golden". It often becomes necessary for family to provide increased assistance and care. As unsettling as this may be for family members who suddenly find themselves parenting their parents, it can be quite devastating for our otherwise independent parents and loved ones.
Before we can provide appropriate and genuine care for our elderly loved ones, it is important to that we take the time to assess their needs during this difficult transition. Our aging parents may seem to make unreasonable demands on our time and resourcesâbut this could very well be their way of trying to accomplish goals and dreams that they had yet to reach. It's important to realize that just because your aging parent or loved one has become more needful of your assistance, they haven't "checked out" of life itself. They need the mental, physical and emotional stimulation of working toward and eventually realizing their goals in life.
Most all of us enjoy a significant level of independence throughout our younger and middle-aged years and can't begin to imagine what it would mean to suddenly or even gradually lose control over what we can do or where we can go as a result of diminishing physical or mental capacity. It is vitally important as the caregiver of your elderly loved one to find a creative way to assist them without completely taking away their independence and drive to be as active and independent as possibleâfor as long as possible. This will not only help them, but it will cause them to trust you more and realize that you only have their best interests at heart.
What is Involved?
In addition to the emotional, relational and physical challenges involved in elderly caregiving, it is important to realize the multi-faceted nature of caregiving which normally involves both medical and non-medical care for an elderly parent or relative.
In order to ensure that you are providing the best quality of care to your love one, the following items should be addressed:
⢠Ensure that the living accommodations for the elderly are convenient and efficient and provide for any special ambulatory needs they may have.
⢠Consult with legal professionals to ensure that proper legal and medical provisionary documents are in order.
⢠Talk with your elderly loved one about assisting them with their financial needs or locating a financial professional to assist with such needs.
⢠Make provisions for nursing or companion care for your loved one in the event that family members are unable to provide such care.
⢠Install medical alert devices in the home of your aging loved ones to ensure their ultimate safety and ability to receive prompt medical attention in the event of an emergency. Also, provide them with a piece of medical alert jewelry in the form of a necklace or bracelet. This will give them access to immediate emergency assistance should they fall and be unable to reach the telephone.
⢠Try to involve your elderly loved ones in family activities and celebrations. Encouraging the elderly to be as active as possible, for as long as possible, will add life to their years and help them live their lives to the fullest!
