Choosing an Unfinished Child’s Table and Chair Set

Perhaps the most important part of working on a project together is actually getting the right item to make the project cost effective and fun.  The items listed below are things you will want to compare when you look to buy them.

Height:  This is very important.  When you select the children’s unfinished furniture items, you have to make sure the height of the table and chairs are not too high to be unsafe or uncomfortable for the kids, but also not so short they will be quickly outgrown.  There is a delicate balance of making sure it will work for a few years, but not being too big to be fully enjoyed right away that you should really take into consideration when you shop.

Width of Table:  If being used inside, the table needs to be small enough to fit in the designated areas, but big enough for kids to use it for homework, coloring, painting, and other projects they might choose to do with it.  This is important because space is almost always a factor in most homes.  As long as you have ample room and a good place to store it when not in use, you should be okay.  If space is limited, you might want to select the sets that fold up for easy storage and use up much less space.

Real Wood and Species:  Be sure you select something made of real wood.  Pine will generally be the cheapest, while hardwoods will be the most expensive.  This is really personal choice more than anything, since pine is structurally sound and will last a long time, when cared for properly.  You might find them in virtually any species you can imagine, so just make sure it’s of real wood, at the minimum, so it can be stained or painted easily and will last.

Ready to Assemble or Fully Assembled:  RTA kids furniture is cheaper, but you have to take the time to put it together, often with less than desirable sets of directions.  If you are handy and have put together RTA child’s furniture or table and chair sets in the past, it is a good way to save money, since it’s much cheaper to buy it this way.  Check out the prices of both options and decide which will fit into your budget and go from there.  It’s an added step that you should consider carefully when you shop around for the bargains.

Price:  You can buy cheap kids table and chair sets, unfinished, but you might not get the quality you need.  Pricing is a personal choice though, since everyone’s budget is so different.  Be sure, however, to make sure you get a quality piece of furniture, even for a youth, so you get good value.

After You Buy Unfinished Child’s Table and Chair Sets

There are some things you’ll need to do before you can complete your project and get it all ready for use.  The following are some of the things you’ll need to consider and think about.

Stain or Paint:  You have a number of different options, including staining or painting the furniture.  If you stain, you will also need to make sure it’s sealed well, to avoid water raising the grain from spills, and staining.  Paint is probably a better option, but many people prefer the look of stained wood.  If you decide to paint, you can buy quality paint and get better coverage and long lasting results.  In addition, you might choose to keep in natural and poly the table to avoid staining.

Prep Work:  You might need to do some sanding or other type of prep work to make the unfinished furniture ready to properly accept paint or stain.  In addition, you might have small burrs that need to be sanded or even sharp corner, which can be dulled with a quick swipe of sand piper.  This could actually improve the safety of the table and chair set, so it should be checked out carefully.

Add Character:  You might want to do some things to individualize your wood table and chair sets for kids.  You can add stenciling, engrave the children’s names in the tabletop, or even paint on special characters from movies or books your kids enjoy.  It will help to jazz it up a little and make it really fun and neat for the kids.  It will also likely help them to get more excited about the project and help them to keep interest as you work on it, since it will likely take quite a while to complete the project properly.  Kids have a short attention span, for the most part, so anything you can do to help them along will generally be a really good idea.

Be Patient:  If you are going to have the children help you out with the project, bear in mind they will likely need a lot of patience and help along the way.  Kids don’t have the motor skills of adults and are prone to spilling paint and dropping things, just as you were when you were young.  Keep patient, so it remains a fun project for the little boys and girls to work on as a family.  You’ll be able to look back at it and remember it as a fun time, not a drag, in the near future.

An unfinished child’s table and chair set project could be a great way for your and the kids to spend some quality time together and work to achieve a common goal.
