Upgrading Your Mobile Phone

By Edited Aug 4, 2016 0 0

Everybody deserves a mobile phone upgrade at some point. Whether you're a constant phone user or someone whose phone spends more time in their pocket than in their hand there comes a time when every phone needs upgrading. There are tons of upgrade choice on the marketplace nowadays, and choosing the right one can be tough. But we're here to help. Today we're talking all about phone upgrades and what you need to know to get some great deals and a fantastic new mobile phone. So if you're hand set is ready to be replaced read on for our advice...

What to Look for in a Decent Mobile Phone...

Mobiles come with long spec sheets detailing all the features of that particular model, but there are some things that you should be looking for. The mobile market moves fast, so the chances are that standard specs have changed since the last time you bought a mobile. For an average smart phone for an average user there are certain standards that you should keep an eye out for. You want a minimum screen size of around 4.5 inches, that's big enough to have a comfortable on screen keyboard for typing, as well as for reading web pages without too much scrolling. Processing power should be around the 1500 MHz mark, with about 1 GB of RAM. You need around 16 GB of internal memory and an 8 MP camera. These are the average specs nowadays, and anything below this might be cheap, but it will also be slow and might be unable to support the most recent operating system updates. Of course, you can go higher than these specs, but you will pay extra for more features.

Upgrading on a Contract...

If you've got a mobile service contract then the chances are that you'll be eligible for an upgrade pretty soon. Operators will give you good deals on upgraded phones at the end of your contract. And some operators will let you upgrade before the end of your contract, most notable O2 and Orange. You'll need to check your operator's conditions for upgrading, but if you're eligible it's a good idea to take advantage of the great prices that you'll get on a new phone by signing a new contract. These will probably be the best mobile phone deals that you can get, as long as you're an existing customer and close to the end of your current contract.

The Best Mobile Phone Deals without Contracts...

If you don't have a contract, or your contract isn't close to ending, you're going to have to look elsewhere for the best mobile phone deals. Prices on new mobiles direct from mobile operators tend to be high unless you're signing a new contract. Your best bet is to check out online retailers, since prices online are usually cheaper than in retail stores. You can also comparison shop online and check prices with different retailers easily, so you're more likely to be getting the best deal on the phone that you want.

Best High End Upgrades...

If you're looking for a top of the line new mobile phone, there are some stunning new models that have recently come onto the market. The top three phones on the market right now are going to be the Blackberry Z10, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and the Sony Xperia Z. Whatever your older model is you're probably going to be satisfied with one of these phones as an upgrade, since they're truly the best devices on the market right now. The exception is if you already own a Samsung Galaxy S III, in which case the S 4 might not have quite enough new features to justify its price. There isn't a great deal of difference between the S III and the S 4 model, so you might want to wait until some of the bigger releases later this year. For others though, any one of these three big phones is a great buy.

Best Mid Market Upgrades...

The middle of the market is where most of the competition is, and there are tons of mid-range mobiles to choose from. However, there are lots of differences between models at this price point. Even identically priced phones can have big differences in performance and features. The top pick for a mid-market upgrade is going to be the LG Nexus 4. It just has more features (and a better screen) than any other mid-market phone. If the Nexus doesn't appeal, take a look at the Sony Xperia T, or some of the HTC One models, like the One SV. These are all great mid-market buys.

Budget Phone Upgrades...

Budget smart phones tend to suffer from small screens and poor processing power. However, there is one clear winner as the best budget upgrade. The Huawei Ascend W1 retails for only a hundred pounds, and it has one of the largest screens we've seen thus far on a budget smart phone. You get a fair amount of power and some good internal storage too. These features make it the obvious choice for a budget upgrade.

iPhone Upgrades...

iPhone upgrades are a tough issue, and it really depends on what model you currently have. If you're running an iPhone 3, 3S or 3G, or an iPhone 4 then the iPhone 5 is a clear choice for an upgrade. You'll get a significant difference in features and performance that's more than worth paying for. If you've currently got an iPhone 4S though, that iPhone 5 upgrade isn't going to be worth it. The only difference between the 4S and the 5 is a slightly bigger screen and a little more processing power that really isn't noticeable. If you're looking to upgrade from an iPhone 4S the best thing that you can do is wait until the autumn, when the new iPhone model will be released. Whether it's the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 6, there'll be a bigger difference between the new model and the 4S than there is between the iPhone 5 and the 4S, so your money will be better spent.
