Buy Cheap Used Air Conditioning Units and Systems and Save

Portable, window mounted, ductless and more

Used air conditioners may have a negative ring to it given that it’s second hand, but don’t cross out used air conditioners just yet. Purchasing used air conditioners can really save you a lot of money and prevent you from burning a hole in your pocket. Just take to mind how “used” or old the unit you are buying. It is not advised to buy pre loved units that are 8-10 years old. Given that the average lifespan of a standard air conditioner is 10-15 years, those 8 year olds and above might not run as efficiently. And sending for parts and maintenance of these severely old air conditioners may even cost you more than buying a brand new unit.

When buying

Buying used air conditioners is just like buying new ones. The first step is to know what type of used air conditioner you want. There are different types according to different needs and factors such as the space and total heat generated by the enclosed area that need to be considered. There are those of window types, portables, etc. Next is to find out the dimensions of the room and space you are willing to allot for your used air conditioner. Because if you are going to buy a used window air conditioner, you have to make sure the unit is not bigger than the window. Ask how old it is, anything lower than 3 years old is still very good. And before you actually buy it, make sure if it works first. This is a disadvantage if you buy online because it can’t be tested. Then ask for return policies if there are any. When buying online, always check the shipping price and make an agreement for refunds in case of damaged or unusable used air conditioners.

Where to buy

Used air conditioners are sold rampantly online. They can also be found in pawnshops, garage sales and used appliances stores. If you don’t want the hassle of going to a shop, you can find an array of pre loved air conditioners without leaving the comforts of your home. One has to simply go online and search for features that best suite his needs.

Relative cost of used air conditioners

When we talk about costing, here is a tip to get the fair market value of an item. This formula is used by accountants when getting the depreciated value of a buildings and equipment. First you get the original cost of the unit. Let’s say a brand new air conditioner is worth 170 dollars, we then divide this by its estimated life. Air conditioners, specifically window types usually last for about 10 years. So 170 divided by 10 is 17. 17 is then multiplied by the years it hasn’t been used. Lets say you are buying a used air conditioner that’s been used for 2 years, that means it has 8 years left (10-2=8). 17 multiplied by 8 remaining years is at $136. So the fair market value of a 2 yr. old used air conditioner is 136 dollars or somewhere near that amount. If prices are too good to be true, be wary, because there might be hidden defects or additional fees (e.g unmentioned shipping fees). Be sure to clarify things from the person or store that you will be buying it from.

Problems with older units

If you happen to buy really old ones like 8-10 years old, it is inevitable to find some problems of the unit, unless the unit is very well maintained. Older cooling systems may be noisier than usual. Another common problem is that it isn’t as cold as it used to because the chemicals like freon, the chemical which makes the air cold, is used up.  There are other units that haven’t been clean that release dust and particles that can trigger asthma and allergies. And you may be finding yourself searching and spending for defective parts and other maintenance fees. Some units give of peculiar smells, this might be dangerous so contact and check with a local repair man to make sure. Used air conditioner are not all bad, the problems mentioned above are cited with really old units in mind, units that are not worth investing. Other than the old ones, slightly used air conditioners more often than not have great reviews in terms of performance.

Purchasing slightly used air conditioners are also good for the environment. When buying pre used units you are saving the materials taken from nature in producing a brand new one. So not only are you saving cash but you are also in a way, saving mother earth.
