Extraordinary Taxidermy

The Victorians could be a very macabre lot, as can be evidence by their popular obsession with taxidermised animals. Such animals were often mounted in realistic poses, like a fox and rabbit, in a natural setting, engaged in fighting behaviour. However the more bizarre Anthropomorphic style of taxidermy, featured animals engaged in more human activities, like a group of kittens and mice engaged in a tea party.

Since the Middle Ages, travelling side shows would journey the length and breadth of England, carting around a strange assortment of unfortunate people, who were known to all and sundry, as freaks. Regarded as curiosities to be gawped and gazed at, this meandering menagerie included: fat people, dwarfs, conjoined twins and those with various genetic anomalies or strange bodies.
