So… why did I start a blog at age 72?  Well, because I died at age 71!  No, I’m not kidding, I am “dead” serious.  I had a congenital heart condition that went undetected throughout my entire life until one day, while at work, I simply dropped dead!  A co-worker called 911 and began applying CPR.  When the ambulance arrived, the medics could not find a pulse and the receiving hospital listed me as “D.O.A”.
However, the attending physician felt that I might be a likely candidate for resuscitation via “therapeutic hypothermia”.  While this procedure is not new, the full recovery success rate is less than 7% and requires the recipient to be in “otherwise” near perfect health.  With permission from my family, he put me “on ice” and began the recovery procedure.  The ensuing 4 weeks are unregistered in my memory bank.
After 6 weeks I was released from the hospital and within 12 weeks I was considered recovered and able to return to work.  Since that time I have been encouraged by many to share my dietary and supplementation habits that have helped me maintain good health for so many years and are perhaps the primary reason I was able to recover from an otherwise certain demise.  Hence, this blog.
My first lesson on good health happened in 1952 at age 12 when I asked my mother why our dog sometimes ate grass. She told me he used grass as medicine when he wasn’t feeling well.  As she was putting another load of clothing into the washing machine I asked her why people don't do the same thing.  And without hesitation she simply said; "Because people don't use the good sense God gave them."   Several years later I learned that grass is possibly the most nutritious plant on Earth!
Another lesson came at age 15 while telling a family friend (who happened to be a doctor) that I had just read a book about vitamin C.  He told me that supplementing with vitamin C is a “good thing to do” because our body cannot make it and we seldom get enough in our diet.
After high school I set out to become a doctor. However, while taking prep courses for medical school, my own research caused me to question the influence of the drug industry on the health profession. I disagreed with their reliance on drugs and surgery to “cure disease” versus promoting things like juicing, supplementing, and a healthier diet.
Besides, I had already seen the fatal results of drugs and surgery in my own family. And by that time I had learned that the body accomplishes amazing feats of healing every day. For example, if you cut your finger, what happens? Almost instantly new tissue begins to form. And days later, you can’t even tell where the cut was.
I remember back in my childhood when I or one of my siblings were ill or injured, Doctor McCartney would come to our house. We would watch for his 1940 Chevy coupe to arrive, carrying him and his “office” which consisted of a black flip-top medical bag. And after administering to our wound or fever, he would give us a little vial of “medicine”.
That little vial contained BB sized pills that we were told to place under our tongue every hour until the “hurt” went away. He knew that when we placed those pills under our tongue, our inner mind along with our mother’s chicken broth, and the natural healing power of our body would do the rest. And the hurt always went away. And of course, the pills were sugar placebos, not drugs. Dr McCartney practiced “good sense” medicine.
I learned that the best way for your body to receive everything it needs is through fresh fruits and vegetables. And the best way for your body to receive them is either raw, or juiced!  However, with processed foods and fast foods taking over the bulk of our diet, supplements have become a necessity.  And don’t depend on one brand.  iHerb offers 600 brands and 30,000 products.  I discovered them over 10 years ago and I highly recommend them.  You can preview their site here.
If you have children you should ask your doctor what vitamins and minerals might be needed according to their eating habits.  In the meantime, this 3 minute video by Dr Gary Kohls contains some good advice on what children may need in the way of supplements.  You can view it here
The days of “good sense” health care can only return when those of us who believe in natural health share our knowledge and the benefits of our good health with others who have been caught in the quagmire of organized medicine where money is King and health is secondary.

Acai Berry For Diet and Colon Cleanse

This little known berry (acai pronounciation: ah-sigh-ee) was brought to the attention of millions when it was featured on TV by Oprah and Dr Oz in 2007. The widespread attention brought hucksters out of the woodwork who began marketing it as an all encompassing ingredient for weight loss which eventually became known as the "acai berry weight loss" diet. This subsequently led to both Oprah and Dr Oz filing law suits for misuse of their names. After all, if Oprah and Dr Oz are promoting it, it has to be good, right?

How To Live With High Blood Pressure

Bottom line, while lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements such as Coenzyme Q10 may help you control hypertension, do not skip a trip to your doctor who might have additional suggestions on how to control your blood pressure. It is important that you include your doctor in anything you do because if your high blood pressure is not controlled in a proper manner you could incur a more serious problem that could lead to a heart attack, stroke, brain hemorrhage, kidney disease, or vision loss.

Is Garlic A Magic Drug?

The two primary ingredients that produce the health benefits are allicin and diallyl sulphides. The pungent herb also contains vitamins B and C and is rich in calcium, sulphur, zinc, copper, potassium and phosphoric acid. While garlic is condsidered by many to be a wonderful health supplement, it should be used as part of a healthy lifestyle, not as an alternative to it. You should always consult your physician regarding any medical condition.

Can Healthy Eating Prevent Disease?

Did you know that all pharmaceutical drugs are poison? If you don't believe me, just watch the commercials during your favorite TV program. What Is Alzheimer Disease

Another difficult problem rests in the apparent fact that the disease appears to be present in a patient's brain for as many as 15 years prior to showing any symtoms. Alzheimer's will usually become noticeable at or around the age of 70, so the apparent slow progression becomes yet another barrier to a solution. By the time a patient becomes available for clinical studies, doctors are dealing with a disease that has already been progressing for over a decade.

Is Prostate Cancer In Your Horoscope?

Disease of the prostate is often referred to as a nutritional disease because it is considerably more common in developed western countries where diets include red meat and dairy products. Some scientific studies have changed the view that dairy products are nutritionally beneficial. In fact, countries that consume the most milk have the highest occurrence of prostate cancer.

Are You Vitamin D-ficient?

Many, if not most, Americans do not get enough vitamin D. We all know that vitamin D helps your body build strong bones. However, if you don't get enough vitamin D your body will actually destroy your bones in search of calcium! And without vitamin D your body is unable to absorb calcium from food or supplements.

The Best Gout Treatment Is A Gout Diet

Gout prevention is actually easier than you might expect. However, with our dependence on processed foods and fast foods, many of the nutrients that are needed to keep your body healthy are washed down the drain in our food processing plants. And since the advent of fast food restaurants in the 1950's, hamburgers have become almost a daily mainstay. This wouldn't be so bad if the hamburgers were actually made from lean, red muscle meat that contains less purines. However, much of our hamburger and hotdog meat consists of animal organs and leftover "scraps" from the meat rendering plants.

Pancreatic Cancer Resists Chemotherapy

Because there are very few warning signs, pancreatic cancer often times escapes early detection. Also, when people do experience symptoms, they are usually in the form of muscle aches and back pains which can be attributed to other problems. In addition, there are currently no screening processes for the detection of pancreatic cancer. About all you can do to prevent it is to watch your diet and take supplements such as Milk Thistle.

Eric Finkelstein, co-author of "The Fattening of America", says medical costs won't go down unless Americans make a serious effort to improve their diet and exercise patterns. Whole Foods Are Essential To A Healthy Diet

Choices such as donuts and pastries mid-morning, followed by chips, candy bars and sodas in the afternoon offer nothing in the way of nutritional calories. Actually, eating snacks throughout the day is not only quite common, it is also a good idea. However, when choosing daytime snacks, you should choose only those that contain nutritional calories.

Cheating Death With Therapeutic Hypothermia

Today, even though therapeutic hypothermia is the only therapy proven to decrease mortality and improve neurological outcomes in comatose patients after cardiac arrest, an analysis of data on 26,519 patients in the United States suggests that it is used in only 0.35% of cases.

Try To Save Your Gallbladder Before You Submit To Removal

After gall bladder surgery you will be more sensitive to the fat content of your food than before. This will necessitate changing to a low fat diet. Something you should have done long ago. More than likely, you will be forced to change your eating habits and you will need to offset high fat foods by combining them with a whole grain such as rice which will absorb some of the excess fat. Most likely you will still have problems with gas. Your choice of foods will have to include grains and vegetables and you will have to watch your fat gram intake at all times. Removing the gall bladder does not mean that you won't have other digestive problems including colon cancer if you fail to eat right.

Why You Should Use Health Supplements

When you attempt to keep your body running with processed foods and fast food, the digestive process will create more and more counter productive activity within your system. If you are not providing your digestive system with sufficient nutrients to counter act the unhealthy activity, the disease process will begin. Hence the reason why "all disease begins in the gut".
