Ancient Native American Cultures

The phrase Native American Art refers to the artwork developed by the ancient ancestors of what is presently regarded as North, South, and Central America. This may also include art that is known as pre-Columbian, which means it was developed before Columbus and Europeans got to America, or it could be referred to as colonial or post contact if it was produced after Europeans came in contact with Native Americans.

Refugees in Yemen: Integration as a Durable Solution?

Yemen has been accepting Somali refugees for over twenty years on a prima facie basis and while the government has been accepting of the large numbers of people who arrive on its shores, it has not done much else in terms of providing the social services which refugees require. The purpose of this paper is to examine and arrange into a coherent form the narratives of refugees in Yemen and various stakeholders in order to further inform urban refugee policies in Yemen or another context. This paper investigates why the Yemeni government accepts refugees under the guise of hospitality, but then enforces unequal treatment and discrimination of refugees. Furthermore, what is the potential of integration efforts if the government is unwilling to integrate refugees?

A Critique of Social Design Theories

From the first stone tool to the IPod, humans and human ancestors have a likely two million-year-old relationship with technology. Thus, it is hard to study humans without also acknowledging the objects that they create and live with. Yet objects really don't get nearly the attention and study that people do, especially in the field of social sciences. It seems that as humans become more engaged than ever with technology in the present day, there has been a recent focus on the role and possible application of design thinking to other areas. Similarly, trends in the design world are looking to apply a greater understanding of people in order to improve the overall design of objects.

Youth Identity in Yemen

A paradox in many ways, Yemen stands in contrast to the other countries of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a lone republic among monarchies, however remains the poorest and least developed country on the peninsula, and indeed the only non-member of the GCC. Images of Yemen conjure up scenes akin to the Wild West for their neighbors to the north. Yet it has been a locale for one of the larger social uprisings which the MENA region has seen over the past year. Nobel Prize winner Tawakul Karmun is a symbol that the world has recognized this movement of mind and blood.

The Yacoubian Building

The 2006 film Yacoubian Building is based on the 2002 novel of the same name. It covers the overlapping lives of residents of the real-life Yacoubian Building in downtown Cairo in the year 1990. The film serves as a critique of democracy in modern Egypt since the 1952 revolution through the portrayal of the characters' lives. Contradiction and irony are recurring themes and invoking God is often juxtaposed with sin, corruption and abuse of power.
