Uses For Barcode Scanners
Barcode scanners are everywhere. You see them in grocery stores, department stores, even at gift registries. With the world becoming more and more computerized, scanners like these have helped keep us organized.
Inventory control, pricing and sales are just some of the uses for these. Long gone are the days of the price gun, with its roll of stickers and number wheels to set the price. A printed out page of labels from the computer and a little time is all it takes to become that much more efficient.
Barcodes can be used for asset management. A sticker placed on a piece of equipment such as an air conditioner or computer cannot only tell you what it is, but how long you have had it and what type of repairs and maintenance have been done to it. Coupled with control software, this can be a great tool in tracking costs and knowing ahead of time when a replacement may be needed.
Have you ever been in a department store and needed to know the price of an item but there was no salesperson in sight? Most stores have begun installing barcode scanners on the columns in each department that is accessible to the public. This lets you check the price without having to walk from aisle to aisle trying to find a salesperson, then follow them back to the register to get your answer.
They grocery stores have them not only built in to the counter to swipe products over, but each counter is equipped with a hand held model for scanning those items that are on the heavy side and do not need to be lifted out of the cart for yet another time. Using these at the counter and when shipments arrive let them track inventory and know when a reorder is necessary on a particular item.
Delivery companies have begun to use barcode scanners to track packages as well. Not only can they be scanned in to the computer system before the driver receives them, but at time of delivery, they can be scanned again to show that they have arrived. This lets you track your package online with most of these companies by way of a tracking number and a simple search.
