Uses for Banners

A banner is a large piece of cloth or other material that displays a logo, symbol, picture, slogan, or some other sort of message. They have been used for centuries to display various types of messages and they are still used today. In some cases, their intended use has changed. Below are listed some of the things they have been used for, both historically and currently.

Advertising

There is a long history of using banners for the purpose of advertising. As banners are often used to convey a message, in advertising it would be used to promote a company, product, or service. Ideally, the banner would be located in a place where it would likely be seen by people who could be potential customers.

Battle

Historically, banners were used in times of war. Conflicting sides would carry banners displaying insignias, often religious in nature, that would denote the affiliation of those who carry it. These are also known as heraldic banners or banners of arms.

Church

Traditionally, church banners were used in processions, which could be either inside or outside of the actual building. Recently, they are not used so much in moving processions, but rather in a stationary position on walls or pillars.

Protest

Banners are often used to protest something. These protests are often political in nature and the banners are used to display a message that they wish to convey to a number of people. Banners of protest are often used by people in a subordinate position who disagree with a decision or action that they have no power to oppose by themselves. Examples include labor disputes and political decisions.

Web Banner

A web banner is a relatively new development, coming about since the advent of the internet. A web banner is a form of advertising that appears somewhere on a web page. It is not a physical entity like the other types of banners listed, but it takes the appearance of and serves the general purpose of a traditional advertising banner. Clicking on the banner usually directs the surfer to the page being advertised.
