Uses for Vinegar
Vinegar isn't just for food anymore! Vinegar has many uses around the home for cleaning purposes, including laundry, dishes, even cleaning glass and windows! Vinegar is not only completely natural, but also anti-bacterial and anti-viral, cleaning just as well as commercial cleaners at a fraction of the cost. Vinegar is also environmentally friendly, as it contains no harsh synthetic chemicals and is completely natural.
Use vinegar to disinfect the kitchen sponge as you clean the microwave. Place half-cup of vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl. Place the kitchen sponge in the bowl with the vinegar and put the bowl into the microwave. Heat the bowl with the vinegar and sponge in it for 30 seconds in the microwave. Let the bowl sit in the microwave for several minutes to ensure that the sponge is not too hot to handle. Waiting also ensures that the steam inside the microwave has time to work to soften the grime inside the microwave. Open the microwave and wipe the inside of the microwave with the vinegar-soaked sponge, starting at the top of the microwave and working your way down. Finish cleaning the microwave by using the sponge to wipe the outside.
Use the sponge and bowl of vinegar to continue cleaning the kitchen. For tough grime, use baking soda and water to create a paste on the surface of the counter, table, or stove top you wish to clean. First get the surface wet with water, then sprinkle the baking soda over the wet surface and rub with your hand to create a paste. Let the paste sit for a few minutes, then use the vinegar-soaked sponge to wipe away the baking soda paste and grime.
Clean the toilet easily with vinegar and baking soda. Pour about half a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl and let the baking soda settle. Pour a half-cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl and let the baking soda and vinegar create a natural chemical reaction. The bubbling that occurs is oxygen escaping from the mixture. The oxygen reaction will make it really easy to use a toilet brush to wipe away the dirt within the toilet bowl. If you used the vinegar earlier to clean the microwave or kitchen, you can use the same vinegar to pour into the toilet bowl- it's alright if the vinegar is dirty, as it will be flushed down the toilet and will still create the natural reaction with the baking soda as described above.
Use vinegar in laundry as a natural fabric softener. Add vinegar during the rinse cycle, or add vinegar at the start of the cycle by pouring the vinegar into the bleach compartment in the washing machine. Vinegar will not only make clothes very soft, but will also take away any foul smells in laundry, causing the laundry to smell very clean! If vinegar is used for laundry, no synthetic fabric softener, whether in liquid or sheet form, needs to be used. This is especially nice for those with sensitive skin, as vinegar in clothing will not irritate the skin as commercial fabric softeners can. Many other uses for vinegar exist, as vinegar has been used for household cleaning much longer than commercial cleaners have. If you're considering doing your part to help the environment, one easy change you can make is to switch to vinegar for cleaning!
