Using Propane Heaters Indoors
There have been a lot of improvements made with the safety features installed on propane heaters. Whereas once it was quite risky to use propane heating indoors, it is no longer such an issue. Most indoor propane heaters are designed with an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) that will automatically shut down the heater when oxygen levels in the room drop below a certain point.
The main danger with propane heating is the carbon monoxide fumes that the fuel gives off. When used in small enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation, this has resulted in deaths. However, providing your room is well ventilated or the heater is vented, and it comes with an ODS sensor propane heaters are perfectly safe to use indoors.
There are different types of indoor propane heaters. Some heaters are mounted on the wall, similar to a large sized gas or electric heater. These are usually vented and are often attached to an LPG gas tank that is located on the outside of the building. These heaters light up fast and are usually quite quick at heating a room. The size of the heater needed will depend on the area that needs to be heated, you can ask for size recommendations when you buy your heater. These usually also have a fan which helps to move the warm air out into the room.
You can also buy smaller propane heaters, space heaters, that can be used in individual rooms and moved from room to room if needed. As these portable models are not vented you will need to make sure that the room is adequately ventilated, perhaps by leaving a window open a little. They have a small propane canister attached to the heater which usually simply needs to be replaced once it has run out of gas.
Other indoor areas that benefit from propane heating includes the garage. Perhaps not technically an indoor area, a garage can be a very useful extension to a home if it is properly heated during winter. The most popular type of propane garage heaters are wall mounted and usually vented. Being able to mount the heater on the wall, similarly to the way you would mount an air conditioning unit, helps to free up floor and bench space which is why this type is usually the preferred choice for garage installation.
Again, providing you buy a newer model propane heater that has a built in ODS you should not experience any problems at all in using indoor propane heaters. They are cost effective as propane heating costs are low, easy to install, quick to heat up a room and, these days, totally safe to use.
