Using Reusable Furnace Filters

Living on a budget is a reality of the world we live in today. There are many things you can do that will save you money.

Utilizing reusable furnace filters instead of the disposable variety is one way to be more frugal at home. Disposable filters may seem cheaper in the short run but most people do not realize that as with any disposable product these will cost you more over time. Another way to save money is to make sure that your furnace is operating properly otherwise your energy bills can become inflated. Cleaning your furnace filter regularly means that it will not be clogged up with dust and your furnace won't have to work so hard to push the air through. If you use disposable filters you need to check every month whether or not they need to be replaced. If you do what you're supposed to do and replace your disposable filters when necessary you will purchase quite a few filters over time and this will create a larger then necessary expense.

The price tag on reusable furnace filters is more expensive than disposables but due to the fact that you do not need to replace them as often, the total cost over time ends up being much less. This doesn't mean that you have less work. You still need to check your filters regularly and either wash them or brush them until clean. However you do not have to replace them with new filters. A variety of reasonable furnace filters exist on the marketplace. Before you go shopping make sure to know exactly what type of filter is suitable for the furnace that you have. Furnace filters are made of different materials which reflects on their durability and quality. Fiberglass is the cheapest type of filter available. There is a pleated type of furnace filter that is available which happens to be extremely effective at trapping particles in the air which decrease air quality in your home as well as causing harm to your furnace. You should look for furnace air filters that can filter out very small particles. The way to check this is to look for furnace filters with higher filter ratings.

MERV is the standard of measurement for how efficient a filter is. The more pleats a furnace filter has the higher the rating will be. Another benefit of reusable furnace filters is that they are less harsh on the environment since you do not throw them out nearly as often as disposable furnace filters. You can even purchase reusable furnace filters that are recyclable which is an added benefit to the environment.
