Using Pumice Stone to Smooth My Skin

By | Jan 20, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

I recently purchased pumice rock from a natural bath store. I was a little skeptical on using this on my skin, but since my heels were in such dire shape, I had nothing to lose. I had heard that using natural pumice rock on the dry callused skin on my heels and feet would make them soft and smooth again. Pumice rock has been used for a long time in history, but and it has many uses. For me, it had one, fixing the dry skin on my feet.

Pumice is light, coarse, and is usually brown or gray. The shades of color vary, with the lighter of the color means it has more amounts of silica in it. The pumice rock is created from volcanoes, and is formed when magma gets in water, not allowing the molecules to form normally. There are various types of pumice rock; the ones to be used on your feet or skin are rounded, usually shaped this way, and with small holes. The smaller the holes in the pumice, the better it is for your feet. I have found when the holes are larger; it can be less effective on your feet.

The main use of this rock is of course to remove dead skin. It is most effective on the bottom of your feet, or the heel where there are rough callouses and dead skin. It must be remembered that this is a rock, and applying too much pressure could cause some discomfort. The application should be firm, yet gentle when applying it to those rough areas. Once it is done, you will be amazed at the soft smooth skin of your feet.

The pumice stone should be used with wet skin, preferably when you are in the bath tub or shower. You should immerse your feet for at least 5 to 6 minutes, and then apply the pumice stone gently but firmly on the rough areas. Usually on your feet it is your heels and the balls of the feet. Push the pumice stone softly back and forth, firmly, but not too hard. The rough, dead skin will come off easily. After you have taken off the dead skin, feel the area and see if it is smooth. If it is smooth, dry the area, and then apply natural lotion or Vaseline on the skin. Then cover the feet with socks and sleep with them all night. In the morning, you will be happy to see soft, smooth feet again. Sometimes it may take two or more times to get all the dead skin off. Be sure not to use if it is irritated, this may cause more discomfort. You can purchase a pumice stone at retail stores or health food markets.
