Using a Drawing Tablet for Computer Images

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

The traditional way in which illustrations and technical drawings were created was by hand using pen and paper. While some still work in this manner there are many others who prefer working digitally. Using computers to create and manipulate digital images is a common practice these days.

A drawing tablet is one of the most widely used accessory to prepare digital images. It uses an input device to write on a flat surface. The input device is typically a pen or stylus although a mouse like accessory known as a puck can also be used. The tablet is connected to the computer and the operator draws on this. However, the final image does not show there and is more typically transmitted to and shown on the computer screen.

The style of working digitally using a tablet is not too different from using a pen and paper. This means that that someone who is used to working with pen and paper can easily work with stylus and tablet. This is a benefit for creative people and means they can easily work with digital images.

Creating on screen images using a drawing tablet for computer is not too difficult with a little practice. A prepared digital image can be easily manipulated and altered and this is one of the main advantages over pen and paper. Multiple copies of an image can also be saved. However a drawing tablet also has other purposes. It can be used as an alternative to more traditional input devices such as a wired or wireless trackball mouse. It can also be used to write on screen text on computers which have handwriting recognition software.

If you are searching for drawing tablets they can also be known by other names and these include a graphics pad or a digitizing pad. Although essentially doing similar tasks there are a few different types on the market that work in different ways. Some of the styles include optical tablets, acoustic tablet, active tablet and passive tablets and it is worth researching these prior to making a purchase.

The purchase cost of drawing tablets can vary from around $50 for a simple tablet designed for use in the home to $300 or more for tablets designed for commercial use in an office. The best know manufacturer of these types of devices is Wacum. They have a range of tablets for sale ranging from around $80 for their Bamboo line to $200 and more for their more professional Intuos models.

When looking into drawing tablets you will need to consider the size required. If you have limited room available then a smaller 4 x 5 inch model may be appropriate. This also has the advantage of limiting the arm movements required to prepare an image. However if you work more expressively and make sweeping movements in your work a larger size may be more your style. Typically 9 x 12 is one of the standard larger sizes available.

Working with a drawing tablet can provide advantages over pen and paper. It is therefore something to consider if you need to prepare and alter images or photos. In the graphics world it can be a useful tool to have available.
