Video Game Sequels Released in 2012

By Edited Oct 11, 2016 0 0

There are some great video game sequels coming out in 2012. None of the games necessitates buying the original (though it couldn't hurt). I expect these sequels to build on previous releases and be some of the best games released in 2012.

Max Payne 3

Earlier Releases

The original Max Payne was released in 2001, the second in 2003. The third installment has been long awaited by Max Payne fans. Currently set for release in March of 2012, Max Payne 3 features the main character of the series as a haunted, bleak individual. The initial releases, while not classified in the horror genre, were largely regarded as some of the scariest, creepiest video games to date. The plots were very dark and the audio was masterfully done for the most eerie effects.

Expectations

Rockstar Games rarely disappoints gamers and is not expected to for this release. The new game will employ new features that will make the game much more realistic: limited ammo capacity, cover system (including using people as cover), more destructible environment, and developers addressed Max's addiction to painkillers in the healing bit of the game.

Borlderlands 2

Earlier Releases

Borderlands originally released in 2009 and was like a newer video game version of the Mad Max movies. The original (and the sequel) takes place in a barren environment with maniacal characters both human and non-human. Rockstar Games used the Unreal Engine 3 to give users fantastic, cartoonish graphics and cinematic sequences. There were four very popular pieces of downloadable content that were available after the game was released. Worldwide, this game sold more than four million units.

Expectations

The sequel is set five years from the end of the initial release. While gameplay will remain quite similar, there will be added weapon classes. The locations (Pandora, etc.) will remain in the storyline, as will some of the characters. The user character will be different though, with the user characters from the first installment only appearing in a cameo. Like the first game, the player will have four different characters to choose from. In the new version of the game, enemies are expected to be 'smarter' and more resourceful. There are some leaked videos of Borderlands 2 footage online.

Diablo 3

Earlier Releases

The original Diablo release was one of the best reviewed games the year it was released. It was released for Playstation and PC from '96-'98. Diablo and Diablo 2 were fantasy themed games that were very dungeon-esqe, offering players fantastic, dark graphics and amazing gameplay. The second release is still one of the bestselling computer games of all time. Diablo 2 was only released on PC & Mac and that will be the case for Diablo 3 as well.

Expectations

Ask any PC game which release they're most excited about and they will likely tell you: Diablo3. In Diablo 3, you are the heroe(s), tasked with defeating demonic characters. One of the most exciting alterations for the third installment is the use of Skill Runes. These items are used to alter the effects of skills, weapons and spells and add a great level of customization to each character. Diablo 3 will also allow players to fight against other players, using all the skills and items their characters have earned in-game.

 Mass Effect 3

Earlier Releases

The Original Mass Effect was developed by BioWare and released in 2007, the second in 2010. The game is a science fiction role-playing game that employs the third person shooter perspective. The initial two releases were wildly popular. The games were massive in scope, could take days to complete and involved heavy story customization. One of the most well reviewed features was the ability the player had to choose nearly every response in the game when interacting with other characters. Choices made during dialogue would impact future story and character interactions.

Expectations

The main character, Commander Shepard, returns for what is expected to be the last release for this specific story-line. Mass Effect 3 is probably the most hotly anticipated release on this list and will likely sell more units than any other game next year. Melee attacks are going to be a more prevalent combat option than in previous games and different classes will use different types of melee attacks. The plot has Earth being attacked by the Reavers and Shepard is the only one who can save  us.

The Darkness 2

Earlier Releases

The Darkness was a first-person shooter released in 2007. The original game was set in modern day, employing both current combat features and those of the 'darkness'. The Darkness had a unique plot and some fun features but it was not a top seller.

Expectations

Starbreeze studios, the developer of the original title, will not be involved in the making of the second. Very little is known about this sequel, aside from the fact that Digital Extremes will be developing this one. It has been rumored that the sequel will follow a similar plot and use the same main character from the first game.

Darksiders 2

Earlier Releases

Darksider was originally released with a plot that allowed the player to control War, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The plot drove gamers to buy it and they weren't disappointed. In my opinion, Darksider was one of the best-looking games of 2010. The graphics were fantastic and the art used for the environment was unique and polished.

Expectations

In the sequel, gamers get to play as Death himself. Developer, Vigil Games, is said to have expanded the game entirely, offering more varied enemies, larger dungeons and more general characters. This will be a lesser-known release of 2012 but will impress gamers and will be rated highly.

Be sure to check specific release dates (most aren't to the day yet, and they change them constantly anyway) as 2012 approaches to pre-order your favorites. These will be some of the most exciting games for next year and you're going to want to be ready for these 2012 video game releases.
